How do I register my new Nexus 7.  I want to be sure my warranty is in force.

As far as hardware warranty support, your dated purchase receipt is all that is needed. 

Regarding software and media, log into your Google account via the dashboard (https://www.google.com/dashboard/ (https://www.google.com/dashboard/)) and all your account activity should be there for problem support.
