Title: Network File Sharing
Post by: tenson on August 16, 2012, 03:35:04 PM
Hi,

I just got a Nexus for my birthday. Is it possible to do file sharing with my win PC? Example: watching a movie on my PC HDD on the nexus7, or viewing photos from an SD card stuck in the PC USB port.

You can use the N7 on your home network just like any other computer.

Do you have to install some kind of file management app to view the network from the Nexus?

Can you give the steps to viewing a movie from a networked pc?

ES File Explorer is a really good android app for viewing network shares on any android device.  You can use that to browse a samba share or shared Windows Network Drive.

Viewing movies (other than just copying them over the network) needs you to have some kind of media server running on the windows box and then a dlna compatible streaming app on the tablet, there are loads available...

I just navigate with ES to the file I want to watch and tap it.  MX player plays most video files.

Shortly after getting my nexus I bought a file explorer called wifi file explorer. It of course allows for wifi transfers. I think it opens a port (8000 to be exact) so all you have to do is go to 192.168.1.8:8000 in your url browser and it opens a mirror of the program. Then it's just a matter of uploading/downloading files from the N7.
