Open the Play Music app.  Long-touch each song until a menu pops up.  Choose "delete from library" for each song.

I have the same question.  I tried that suggestion, but the menu that comes up doesn't have a "delete" option.

After the long press you 'drag' it to the delete option on the top of the screen.

Not even when you hold your finger on the file, like how you remove a widget from your homescreen?

You could try manually deleting it, I'm honesty not sure this will work because we don't have Google Music here in the UK but with the Google TV &Video app the downloaded files are on this path...

 sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.videos/files/Movies

You'll need a file manager app like Astro, Solid Explorer or ES but try a similar path for music, like...

sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.music/files/Music

It might not work but I thought it was worth mentioning. Hope it helps.

You can can delete it by logging into your Google Music from a PC. The mobile browser does not allow deletion of the pre-installed music content. Also I have not found the option to delete it in the Nexus 7 audio player.

Thanks for the pointer to Google Music online; I just downloaded the Music Manager to my PC to better manage tunes. And I deleted a few of the "free" songs online that I knew I'd never listen to.

Cheers,

D'oh, of coarse it's online music....

Google really do need to sort this out for other countries, we're missing out!

I've tried the suggestions on this page with no success.  I found a suggestion elsewhere that said it could be done with windows media player but it too didn't work.  It recognized the Nexus and synched with it, but wouldn't add or delete or edit.  Now I'm following up on a lead that media monkey can do it.  !st have to learn media monkey.  Will let you all know if it works.

Why doesn't Google have something to say that would help?

Why do you need to delete it? Its technically not even on your device its in the cloud.

fxsarge, while its source is in the cloud, it's derivative is on my screen on my Nexus 7.  I would like to clean things up and have on my screen the things I want and that I like and enjoy.   If you could assist me and the community in any way to achieve this, I'm sure we would all be grateful to you.

Open the "Play Music" app on your Nexus 7 (the gold headphone icon) and swipe left or right until you find the category, "Songs" and you will see all of your songs, including the pre-installed ones. Tap the key to the right of the song name and you will find the option to delete it.

Thanks S.Prime, mission accomplished.  What are your tips for managing music on the player?

When you say manage your music, I am presuming you are referring to managing your current music collection that is on your PC. If I am correct, then you should be familiar with Windows Media Player, which IMO, would be your best management option. Your Nexus 7 is recognized as a MTP Device (Media Transfer Protocol) when connected to your Windows computer allowing you drag your selections into the sync box for your Nexus 7 and then click sync to transfer the selections. Remember if your music content is mp3 format they will play in your native media player on the Nexus 7, but if they are WMA's you can choose to convert them to mp3's or download the WinAmp app from Google Play, which will play WMA's, from what I understand.
