Title: Start-up Screen
Post by: gp123 on August 21, 2012, 09:08:14 AM
New to N7, so pardon this dumb question

When I press N7 power button I see the first screen I see following boot-up is Time-Date and a Lock icon.  Touching this expands icon to show a choice of Google or Unlock.

Is this the way N7 normally starts?  Why the "lock" mode?  Any way to go directly to "unlock"

Go to Settings then Security and tap screen slide lock and select None and it is gone.

Worked just fine.  Thanks.

Curious as to why one would use the "slide-to-unlock" option.  Any benefit to this?

It's a feature from Android phones, if the device is locked and you accidently press the power button to activate the device then you could start applications without wanting too.

This would also of course waste battery...

There's also the other screen locks of course, available on both Android phones and tablets like the PIN, Password or Face unlock. Obviously these protect you the user from unauthorized access to your device, personally I have sensitive information on both my N7 and my Android phone that I wouldn't want somebody to access whether they stole my device, I lost my device or just some nosey sod if I stupidly left it lying around.

Hope that helps you understand more.

Of there are the other security options like the unlock pattern, but the only advantage that I can see the unlock swipe with no security is that it hides your screen when you wake your tablet so as not to expose what you have open.

Thank for the clarification.

One further question:
Looking for an N7 (folio) case and I see that some of them have a "magnetic startup" to activate N7 when the case is opened.  Make sense?  How does this work?  Magnetic sensor in N7?

Folio cases, that activate the magnetic sensor in the Nexus 7, have a magnet inside of the front cover that puts the tablet in sleep mode when the case is closed and wakes it when the case is opened.
