You can now use USB or SD storage without rooting your device with this app:

I checked this out last night on Google Play -- pretty awesome.  Went back this morning to snag the app -  and the item is no longer there! What's up with that?

I forwarded the link to my email (from my work email  ;D). When I get home from work, I will click on that link on my Nexus 7, and hopefully that will work. Thanks a lot bob87794 for the heads up !

It's back up.  I'm actually surprised that Google allowed this app in the Google Play Store.  Apparently they made the developer remove exFAT capability which is why it was unavailable for a while.   But it apparently let's you read pictures, video and docs off any usb formatted to FAT16 or FAT32.   I'll try it tonight.   Looks like it could really help out the storage issues for Nexus 7 owners.   Only limitation is that it doesn't let you export...just import so it's read only.   Still...pretty cool.

Yeah, after checking everywhere online this a.m. only to find it unavailable everywhere, it all of a sudden showed up. And then I noticed that the previous update was Saturday (v.2.02), and the current update was today, the 22nd, at v.2.03).

I keep hoping the developers will find something -- anything -- internal to Jelly Bean that will allow the export capability.

Update

2.0.4.1
+Fix for corrupt 2.0.4 build!
2.0.4
+Hidden directories are no longer scanned - should resolve Mac recycle folder issues.
+Added .mobi and .epub support - I could not find anything that would open a .mobi externally. It is likely you will have to open the third party app. and then open the downloaded file.
+Added .srt support - These should be saved, not streamed.
+Crash fixes

Just downloaded and it ran like a champ. I transferred a sample Sunset.jpg picture from Windows XP standard pictures and it looks great.

I had been really getting close to rooting my N7 but this works great.

Best $1.99 I ever spent!!!

Great find, bob7794. This app is simply fantastic. Have had some real fun with this the past couple of days.

Yes fat 32 should work. It will NOT see NTFS.

Are you sure the drive is formatted in Fat32?

Does your regular computer see the drive?

Also it will only see certain types of files.

Try the sample picture from Windows which is .jpg

Looks good, why did Google make the developer remove exFAT, there are a lot of that Format around.

Very useful but I cannot understand why it recognises some .avi files and not others. Likewise with .jpg files - it shows only about 10% of the pictures I've got stored on USB stick.

If you are having issues playing avi files my solution with MxPlayer was to go to settings and select decoder and add a check to S/W decoding.

Thanks. Its not a case of actually playing the .avi files, its the fact that the Nexus media importer software doesn't actually see all the avi files, nor does it see all the .jpg files that are on the stick. I'm just wondering if the software can only see a limited number of files of a particular kind.

This is a very welcome app, but only certain types of files can be used from the USB flash drive.  Other types of files can only be copied from the flash drive to the N7 (called "Save").  Can anyone clarify what kinds of files can actually be used while they remain on the flash drive?

Also there is a button labelled "lv" (or something like that, I can't quite make it out).  Can anybody explain what it does?
