Title: Smartphone Foxfi + Nexus 7?
Post by: VanZero on September 07, 2012, 07:05:55 PM
I actually have a question which hopefully it might work. Does anyone have a Verizon Wireless smartphone that uses FoxFi, turns android
into a free wifi Hotspot, tried to connect their Nexus 7 wifi to the android smartphone? I believe it will work but I never tried it yet since I
haven't bought Nexus 7 yet.

If it does work, then we can all just bring our smartphone along can use it as a wifi hotspot for our nexus 7. Best of all, you don't have to
root the phone in order to use FoxFi. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.foxfi&hl=en

From what I have seen if FoxFi works with your phone, then it generates the hotspot, which is the connectivity key, then any other device with WiFi capabilities should connect to it.

I never heard of FoxFi before, but I just got it from the Play Sore for my Droid X2 and it works perfectly with my N7.

Foxfi is an awesome app.  I live out in the sticks so no internet for us.  That news about killed my son!  No Xbox live!!??   He has a RAZR Maxx like myself and foxfi works great for that!

Yes. I've got an OG Droid and added a Nexus 7 yesterday. I've used PDAnet (cabled) with my OG and laptop in the past.

Today I tried FoxFi on the Droid and  PDAnet bluetooth on the Nexus 7. On the Droid, I had to choose Bluetooth mode rather than "Activate WiFi Hotspot".

Worked like a charm and was able to browse, navigate and check email on the Nexus 7 in the car (as a passenger, of course!).

It does depend on your phone/carrier as to whether you can use wifi or BT.  On my Motorola Triumph with Virgin Mobile the only thing that works is Bluetooth, not wifi.  I know many other phones do use wifi with FoxFi though.

I don't have Verizon but I do use Boost mobile with Foxfi and it works pretty well. The fastest I connected was 920kbs but usually it is much slower. I can't run slingbox or stream video too well but it works for getting online and in the forums.

Bluetooth is probably best and drained my battery on my RAZR Maxx less than WiFi but I'm using tablet talk for SMS and connect it via Bluetooth. Lol double drainage but so worth it.  I love this tablet and the entire android os.

I have a Razr Maxx on Verizon and Nexus 7. Though FoxFi shows it is working (that is, on the Razr Maxx, Hotspot is on.  On the Nexus 7, FoxFi Wifi shows it is connected.  But none of the browsers, Chrome, Google, Opera Mini and Opera Mobile, seem to work.  I thought I read in some blog FoxFi does not work with JellyBean, but you all seem to say it works.  Any help to help understand this will be appreciated.

Thank you.

There is a better solution for the RAZR if you are rooted.  Using an sqlite editor, the entitlement check can be overriden, providing full use of the phones default hotspot feature.

What? Your using Foxfi on the Nexus 7? You should only run Foxfi on the phone.

Well, with my Virgin Mobile Moto Triumph you can only go with Bluetooth and I have to have Foxfi on both the phone AND tablet side.  I'm not aware that Wi-fi is an option while tethering with the Triumph.

I solved this problem by dumping Foxfi and using Open Garden instead. I don't even need pdanet tablet anymore.
Bluetooth was too limited to certain apps and pretty slow. No streaming for me. I can stream with Open Garden. It doesn't scream but it is usable.

I used Foxfi on my Gallaxy Nexus phone tell it was updated to JellyBean os. Now Foxfi doesn't work on JellyBean so I installed Portable Wi-Fi hotspot widget, works great.
