Thanks for your comment about avoiding GMail. I have an account of course to buy things from the Google store. But I don't want to use it as an email client. It probably won't make much difference, but I want to make is as hard as I can for grubby minded NSA and ASIS operatives to poke through my private files.

New Nexus 7 Help (2nd Gen) / Re: Display questions
« on: December 20, 2013, 03:00:54 AM »
Thanks for the advice. I'm becoming aware it's important to learn how to touch or touch and press and drag in _exactly_ the right way. I'm slowly getting there.

I still haven't been able to move My Library off the Home screen, but at least I've been able to make it occupy a smaller area, and it doesn't look so ugly.

I don't think you mentioned how to stop getting the prompts to buy things similar to what I bought. This is blatant advertising. How do I stop these ads from coming? And how do I get rid of those which have already arrived?

New Nexus 7 Help (2nd Gen) / Display questions
« on: December 19, 2013, 01:46:22 AM »
I'm making some progress up the steep learning curve, but have some questions related to the display.

- When I go back to the centre home screen I see My Library, with the covers of some of the books I have read and music I have listened to. I think this looks ugly; I'd much rather have a clean screen with the apps and widgets only. How do I turn the My Library display off?

- Every now and then, for no reason I can see, a little window pops up and asks me if I want new wallpaper, and gives me options. I don't want new wallpaper - at least not until I know what I'm doing. How do I stop this happening?

- On the first screen after I swipe left there are some RECOMMENDED FOR YOU icons. I don't want them, and don't want them to take up screen space. How do I get rid of them, and stop  new ones coming back?

- One of the  widgets I use the most gave me a fright today by disappearing off the home screen. I found it again by pressing the circle with dots in it and saw the widget on the apps and widgets screen. How do I get it back to the home screen? Pressing on it opens it, and trying to slide it while pressing it just copied it to the screen to the right of the home screen. I don't want it there either. Can I delete it and still keep the copy on the Apps and widget screen?

As you can see I have a long way to go, so expect more questions. Is there a good dead tree book I can read to help me blunder around less? I have Chris Herley's 'Google Nexus 7' no fluff guide, but it may be a bit too advanced for me.

Regards, Alex

New Nexus 7 Audio/Video Help (2nd Gen) / Re: How do I listen to music?

Thanks to you both. I'll checkout Windows Media Player first, and go on from there.

Thanks, rasmith. I do have a Windows 7 PC, but very rarely use it for listening to music. I normally use a small hi-fi system.

It's been many years since it I had software to get the tracks off the CDs, so I'll have to start from scratch.

Thanks to you both. My problem seems to have been that I didn't wait long enough for the song to appear on my Nexus. Next time I looked it was on the main screen of the Nexus under My Library. I just pressed on it and enjoyed the aria. I've just pressed Play Music and the aria appeared, so I pressed on it and am listening to it now.

What I really want to do is to make mp3 files from the many CDs I have, and transfer those files to the Nexus to listen to. Is there a How To for Dummies anywhere so that I can learn how to do this? Where do I put the mp3 files? How do I concatenate them in some way so that all the arias from an opera will play one after the other without having to start each one?

New Nexus 7 Audio/Video Help (2nd Gen) / How do I listen to music?
« on: December 11, 2013, 11:06:20 PM »
I've just downloaded the first song on to my Nexus 7, and have got the receipt from Google. But I'm afraid I haven't the slightest idea how to listen to it.

I tried using the Play Music app, but all I got was advertising to try to get me to  use other apps.

Regards, Alex

PS - is there a way to automatically add my signature?

Never having owned a smartphone or tablet before, I figured it would take a little time to figure things out; and it has.

I got my 7.2 this past tues.  Once I figured out that I needed a file manager app (which I got for free at the google store) downloading music and video from my computer to my nexus was a piece of cake.

To connect my computer to my nexus I used the charging cord I got with the unit and it seems to transfer video at the same quality I see on my computer.  For music, once my computer and nexus were hooked up, I went to 'my computer' and located the nexus and clicked it.  And then it was as simple as drag and drop. Done

For my DVD's I downloaded Handbrake and transferred them to my computer in mp4 format.  And then proceeded to do the same thing I did for my music transfers.  I watched parts of the videos on my nexus to check for quality and they came out great.

I don't know what reason I need to get a $20-30 micro usb as the one that came with the unit seems to work fine. Am I missing something here?

Could you tell me please
- What file manager did you get? How did you use it?
- When you transferred files from your computer to your Nexus where did you put them?
- When you had your music files on the tablet how did you listen to them?

As you can see I'm quite ignorant about the Nexus 7, and am really struggling. I've got reading ebooks under control, and I'd like to start listening to music next.

Regards, Alex

New Nexus 7 Help (2nd Gen) / Re: Not yet a beginner questions for Nexus 7

Thanks, S.Prime

I'm not sure about 'widespread difficulty' in CSS support, perhaps because my experience is limited. All I know from personal experience is that the stylesheet in my ebook is honoured on my Sony, Kobo Touch, and (after conversion) on my Kindle Keyboard. It is also honoured well with Marvin and Bluefire on my iPad2, and quite well with iBooks. So the ebook looks good to very good on these ereaders - nothing remotely like the appalling shambles the same ebook looked like with Moon+ Pro.

If there is a deficiency across platforms my limited experience so far indicates that it is confined to Android devices.  I accept without question that the native Android reader used by Google books produces good results. But I can't use that ereader on my ebook, only on theirs.

I also accept without question that my ebook is quite complex, (with long line poetry and so on) and that Moon+ Pro may work with dead simple novels and such. But even there it can't bold titles and headings or even use larger font size. For what it is worth I think that the developer of Moon+ has gone too far in trying for it to be all things for all formats, and has ended up by ensuring that it won't produce an acceptable result on anything.

My wife gave me the Nexus 7 on our 51st anniversary today, rather than Christmas, and I'm having lots of problems.

I made a folder on the Nexus,  copied one of my ebooks over to the folder, and tried Moon+ Pro. The results were appalling. The CSS was completely ignored, and as it was a complex ebook containing poetry the results were nothing like when I checked the ebook on my Sony, Kobo, and iPad. Even when I was able to remove the option of ignoring CSS it the results were still very bad.

Is there an android ebook reader which is designed only for ePub, and which honours the CSS?

Thanks to you both, that's most helpful and encouraging. I'd like to make make sure I understand a couple of points.

Suppose I make a folder and side load ebooks to it; will the Moon+ reader be able to find those ebooks?

Suppose I download an ebook through Moon+; can I choose which folder it goes to, or does it go to the Moon+ folder?

If it goes to the Moon+ folder will I be able to get into that folder with another ereader?

A new topic: Does Moon+ cope with DRM? Apprentice Alf helps me to cleanse ebooks defiled by DRM, so it's not too important to me, but I thought I'd check.

I design the ebooks I do as ePubs, and then convert them to azw3+mobi with calibre. It will be good to have another way to check them as well as my weary old Kindle Keyboard. When presented with a mobi ebook containing azw3 and mobi which version does Moon+ use?

Thanks again for your help.

I don't even have a Nexus 7 yet, but I expect to get one in 19 days and would like to get ready.  This is my first post on the forum, so forgive me if I've put it in the wrong place.

I expect to be using ebooks and music (mp3 files) that I already have, rather than buy from Google Play, but wonder how I can side load them, and whether what app I use will be able to read or hear them .

On an iPad2 if I want to see how one of the ebooks I have designed looks in iPad, Bluefire, and Marvin I have to load the ebook three times, once through each app. So far as I know once it's in the iBooks 'folder' there is no way to get to that ebook with one of the other apps without loading it through that app - in which case I have three copies of the same ebook on my iPad2.

Is it the same with a Nexus 7? If I want to check how an ebook looks on the Sony Android reader and with Moon+ and with the native Google ereader, and so on, will I have to load them through each individual reader? Or is there a way of loading an ebook into one 'folder' and then accessing that one ebook  with any of the ereader apps I have on the Nexus?

Will I be able to set up folders myself on the Nexus? If so, how do I do that?

How does one side load ones own ebooks to a Nexus anyway?

Thanks in advance for any advice, or pointers to where I can get the information. I'll probably have more questions still, so thanks in advance for your patience.

I don't own a Nexus yet but confidently expect my wife to buy me one for Christmas, and hope to prepare myself by asking questions on the forum.

My main hobby is designing ebooks, and one of the reasons for getting a Nexus is to be able to test the ebooks on a tablet.

Another hobby is listening to music, and I hope to learn how to side load some of the hundreds of CDs I have so as to be able to listen to them on the Nexus.

For reasons good or bad I hope to be able to avoid GMail since I value my privacy, so I'll be asking questions about using my current email account.

And I'm sure I'll find other questions to ask, and (I hope) be able to answer.

Regards, Alex
