Nexus 7 Help / Re: Nexus 7 (2012) performance tips

Jim1348 - I'm hoping I can post a link here: a step by step on how to wipe the cache on the N7 2012.

Nexus 7 General Discussion / Re: Still Going Strong!
« on: July 15, 2015, 08:44:46 PM »
I handed off my 2012 N7 to my wife, and I've been using the 2nd gen N7. Both still going strong, though the wife's is pretty laggy. I'm curious: Did you change the battery yourself, or have someone else (e.g. a tech service) do it? If you did it yourself, where did you purchase the battery?

I did a lot of research on charging pads before I purchased an N7-2013. Price wasn't so much an issue (not that I have a lot of money), but I was more concerned with functionality and longevity.  I ended up purchasing the CHOE UPGRADED Qi Wireless Charger Charging Pad. It retails at $70 but is currently on Amazon for a mere $22.00.

It charges my N7 through its slim case; and I don't have to be too careful about how I place the device on the charger, as long as it's fairly centered..

I also use the pad to charge my Moto G-2 phone and my N7-2012 (which sports a very thick leather case) with the use of the DigiYes Wireless Charging Receiver Modules, which plug into the devices' USB port.

P.S. Just noticed the Refurbished 32gb N7 2013 sale on eBay ends in a bit over 21 hours.

Hello, All --

It's been a month since I posted here and ordered the refurbed 2013 32gb N7, so I thought it was time for the update.

I purchased the N7 for $174.99; about a week later the price went up to $184.99 -- and just checking I see the price is now at $179.99, with free shipping.

My N7 arrived in just a few days; packaged in a generic brown box, but with inserts so that the device and attachments (an AC adapter and USB cable) were securely packed.

The N7 itself is flawless: screen, case, everything looks absolutely brand new. Booted up immediately (and a *lot* faster than my original N7) to an update to KitKat 4.4.3. Shortly after the update was installed the N7 received another update for KitKat 4.4.4. And that's where the N7 currently resides; still waiting on the Lollipop update (but I just read that 5.0.2 is supposedly going out to Nexus 7 2013s and Nexus 10s now).

I use the N7 literally every day, sometimes on for hours at a time in the evening while I'm watching TV (multi-tasking, as they say), and it's working just fine.

I'm very pleased and would recommend this refurbed unit, which are still available as I noted above, if anyone has been fence-sitting trying to decide.

I also see that the eBay site shows that 2,129 units have been sold so far. I'm trying to remember, but when I purchased mine I think the number was at 1,880, if I recall correctly. There is no indication as to how many are still available, so I guess the offer could end at any time.

Chromecast And The Nexus 7 / stuttering on tv using Chromecast & N7
« on: January 05, 2015, 09:57:03 PM »
Hi,

Has anyone experienced stuttering on the tv when casting from their N7? It got really bad this evening, enough to have to stop the cast, and motivated me enough to post here.

The WiFi router is in another room and I'm wondering if that's the problem. However I don't have this problem when I cast from my laptop, just the N7 (2013, 4.4.4).

And, while I'm at it, can you recommend a good WiFi extender? I'd be more concerned with quality rather than price.

Ordered one of the refurbed 2013 N7's yesterday; scheduled to arrive by Monday. Will keep you all posted. BTW, shipping was free and I was not charged any sales tax, either.

Interestingly enough, after the purchase, I received an email from the seller, DrivenGPS, with a phone number and email addy for direct contact should I have any issues, need help, etc.

Lastly, yesterday before dinnertime, the eBay add for these N7s showed "1,700 sold." I just checked and it now reads "1,758 sold."  Guess they have a lot of these units.

Thanks, Babyfacemagee, for the lengthy response.  (BTW, I did a search for "refurb" on the N7 2013 forum but came up zip; maybe I didn't search correctly, or....)

Anyhow, I've been checking out that eBay listing for the 32gb device and I think I'm going to go for it, based on your recommendation. My first gen N7 is, I think, simply worn out given how much I used it over the past 2 yrs. I've done a couple factory resets, and just use it for email and news reader mostly, no custom launcher, no icon packs, no widgets, and it still remains dog slow. Time for a new one, me thinks. Plus, I want 5.0.1 Lollipop and I'm still waiting for it on both my original N7 and Moto G2. I suspect the 2013 N7 will get updated fairly quickly.

Cheers, and thanks  again.

New Nexus 7 General Discussion Topics (2nd Gen) / Refurbished N7 2013 32gb
« on: December 15, 2014, 04:17:54 PM »
Hello, Forum,

I've been searching for a good deal on a new 32gb Nexus 7 2013 version. Unfortunately, I'm not finding any *good* deals, the best so far being $252 (plus tax) on Amazon.

However, an eBay seller has 32gb N7's for sale, priced at $186 (not sure if tax will be added or not). That's an excellent price, but I'm VERY leary about purchasing a refurb unit, which is essentially buying someone else's problem. The guarantee is only 90 days.

The last time I bought any electronics refurbed was a desktop PC, and about six months later the hard drive failed on me.  Warranty was also 90 days.

Any thoughts on and/or experiences with refurbed N7s would be most welcome.

Cheers,

Nexus 7 Polls / Re: The Nexus 9 Will You Make the Switch?
« on: October 16, 2014, 04:00:25 PM »
The specs on the N9 are intriguing, to be sure -- but at $479 (plus 8.75% tax) plus a case and screen protector, we're now talking around $550 total, at a minimum. I'd love the speed and resolution, but I'm not ready to pay that price, considering that I'm actually using my 2012 N7 less now than I had months earlier.

Which brings me to a follow-up question: What are your thoughts on picking up a new 2013 N7 to replace the older 2012 N7? My old N7 is pretty much stripped down (no launcher app, no icon packs, no widgets, etc.) and even after 4.4.4 and a system reset it's still laggy as all hell. But it hung in there for two solid years. A new N7 will be getting the "L" update as well and it has more ram and storage (plus the 2 cameras) than the older N7.

Nexus 7 Polls / Re: Nexus 8 anyone?
« on: June 02, 2014, 02:22:39 PM »
My 2012 N7 has slowed down so much that it's pretty much useless now; I think it's just wore out! So, I'm open for anything new, which is why I've been holding off making a purchase (and not having 'droid device at hand is driving me crazy), so the N8 would work for me. However, a lot depends on the specs and price. If I'm not happy with either -- or both -- I'll see about picking up a 2013 N7 LTE

Thanks for the response, StewMc. My only issue with the Google QI charger is the price: $50.00! Add that to the cost of the 2013 N7 LTE, plus a nice case, a screen protector, and we're talking serious money.

Cheers,

So, four months have passed since the last post... Has anyone found the perfect QI charger yet for the N7? I tend to plug in my N7 and forget about it, so I need a QI charger that won't overcharge. I believe the term I want is a charger that "trickle charges" but I could be wrong.

Glad it all worked out, nodsirrah; it has been so long since I started using Calendar on my PC that l wasn't aware of the hassle finding the link. The Android app isn't the best design, so at some point take a look at a very cool app called Cal. It interfaces with Google calendar, so updating Cal  *should* also update Google.
Cheers.

Sorry that I wasn't more clear. Yes, I use Google calendar on my PC as well. I don't use this option personally, but if I understand correctly, gmail can be linked to calendar -- so if I send you an appt in an email it can show up in your calendar.

Just do a search for "Google calendar help."
Cheers,
- martyh
