Nexus 7 General Discussion / Battery Charger
« on: June 03, 2015, 08:39:05 PM »
I have a 1st Generation N7 that doesn't charge properly.  I bought a new battery for it, which worked for awhile, but also stopped charging.  Other than that, my N7 worked and looks great.  I would love to get it back into service if possible.  Is there such a thing as a stand alone charger that will charge the battery outside the device?  If I could just pop a fully charged battery into it whenever necessary, I think it would work just fine.

Please Advise,

Paul

New Nexus 7 Help (2nd Gen) / Will not turn on
« on: August 03, 2014, 09:27:12 AM »
I bought my Nexus 7 one or two years ago.  It was my first (and only) tablet.  The price was right and it was highly rated.  I was very excited to get it.  For one reason or another I migrated to my Galaxy Note II smartphone which was easier to carry and did everything I used my Nexus 7 for and more (like making phone calls and having 4G).  This isn't about which is better though.  I liked my Nexus 7, but found I could do with carrying one less device.  The only problem (and till now not a big one) was that the power button seemed faulty.  I found I had to hold it 5 or 10 seconds (or more) and make two or three tries to get it to power on.  This wasn't that much of a problem as I left it on most of the time.  It was more of an annoyance, but lately I have left my Nexus off for a month or more at a time.  I simply had too many alternatives to get online, my old DroidX2 which I use as a wifi media center and clock radio,  my Chromebook for browsing and Netflix, my Note II for on the go FaceBooking, email etc, and my desktop, which I use for serious work and composing.   After I left my Nexus of for the last 6 weeks I have found I can't power it on.  I've tried several different charging stations which work on my phone and get no reaction.  I can't tell whether it is the battery or the power switch, but right now it is dead as a brick.  I was hoping to sell it to a friend for $100 bucks which seemed a fair price.  Other than the occasional trouble of powering it on I never had a single problem with it.  I'm afraid repairs will wipe out and profit I can make from this and may not truly fix the problem.

Any advice on how I should proceed?

Nexus 7 Help / Keyboard Won't Vibrate

I've never managed to get the keyboard vibrate feature to work. The settings are definitely turned on.  Still touch, but no feel.

Nexus 7 General Discussion / email won't sync
« on: February 27, 2013, 09:00:30 PM »
O ddly enough my Hotmail account won't sync anymore. I've tried deleting and recreating the account several times but it keeps doing the same thing. If I start my email it just says waiting to sync.  I can get in via chrome and I just installed Aquamail and that works, so I guess my problem is solved but I thought I'd share anyway.

Nexus 7 Audio/Video / Lost my Media sounds.
« on: December 25, 2012, 08:45:28 AM »
I am getting no sound from my media files, from YouTube or even using Skype. I've checked my sound volume settings and they are all turned up. When I adjust the sound volume for notifications and alarms I get sample volumes and tones,  but nothing when I try to listen to an mp3 or a video.

What little thing in my overlooking?

Site News / Subscribe to Threads
« on: December 18, 2012, 04:09:37 PM »
Let me start out by saying I like this forum and the way it is laid out.  It is clean and easy to navigate.

Now the gripe (or request).  I'd really like to be able to subscribe to threads on created or posted on.  As it is, somebody may have answered a question I had, but I've either forgotten or haven't checked the thread recently.  From experience I know how frustrating this is when you are trying to conduct a conversation online.

So that's it, subscriptions.

In the case this already exists, please tell me how to do it.  It hasn't jumped up and bit me.

Thanks.  I'll "try" to check back soon for an answer.

Nexus 7 Vs. The Competition / Nexus vs Smart Phone
« on: December 04, 2012, 11:13:58 AM »
I decided to reactivate my DroidX2 smart phone which I never much liked in the past.  It turns out my two months on the Nexus taught me some skills that make my experience on the Droid a lot better.  Now I carry both around which leads me to wonder, do I need both.  Sure the tablet has a larger and better screen which makes it better for browsing and reading, but my smart phone has most of the features I like in my Nexus, plus a 3G connection to the internet, meaning it is my go to device when I am not home.

So, I'm up for an phone upgrade soon which will come with a 4G connection, newer software and a bigger, better screen and a very thin profile.  Since I have to carry one anyway, I'm wondering if I would be better off with just a phone.  It makes one less thing to carry, which in my world means a lot.

Nexus 7 Accessories / I need a tablet bag.
« on: October 14, 2012, 09:34:08 AM »
I've used a "shoulder bag" for years and never liked any of them.  Now I need one worse than ever to carry my gear, including wallet, phone, camera, tablet and a few accessories.  I want one just big enough to get me by.  I found a very nice one here http://www.sfbags.com/products/muzetto/muzetto.php that costs almost as much as my Nexus.  I'm willing to spend some money to get something I like, but I'd like some options before I drop some big bucks on this.

Nexus 7 Accessories / I Need a keyboard

Something portable (roll up?), comfortable and economical.  I am about ready to pull the trigger on this.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0091J4VNI/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=A3E5K6GEFSI075

but it looks a little small and there are no reviews.

Nexus 7 Accessories / Love my MoKo Slim-fit
« on: October 08, 2012, 09:11:59 PM »
I poked around Amazon and Google agonizing over which case to buy.  I really hated holding my bare naked N7.  I'm grateful I didn't drop it before buying a case.  I finally pulled the trigger on the Moko Slim-fit just because it was the last one I looked at and had very good user reviews.  No doubt I will add mine.  I'm very happy with it.  It holds my tablet snugly, turns it on and off and generally feels great.  All for about $15.

Nexus 7 General Discussion / Google Voice Bloopers
« on: October 06, 2012, 05:08:40 PM »
Readers will know I have had growing pains with my tablet.

I've got fat finders with no blood in them.  Tapping on the screen can lead to instant frustration.  Google voice helps, but can go wildly wrong, especially in composing.  Here's an example of  my opening sentence using Google Voice.

"Readers will know I have had girls in pain with my tablet"

I've seen worse, how about you?

Nexus 7 User Tips / Sound Jack - My Pain, Your Gain
« on: September 30, 2012, 07:27:38 AM »
I told this story in the new member introductions, but think it might be worth posting here as a cautionary tale.  I very nearly returned my Nexus 7 to Asus for a replacement.  I made the false assumption that if you could hear music coming out of the internal speakers, you would hear music coming out of your headphones, external speakers or your car stereo when you plugged them in.  I spent a frustrating week trying every set of ear buds, headphones and powered speakers I could find.  I made sure the plug was fully inserted.  Nothing worked.  My last ditch effort came from Asus technical support.  After several go arounds they suggest I check the mute or speaker volume.  I maintained this made no sense as I could hear the music coming out before I plugged in my headphones.  I was chagrined when I saw my volume was next to zero. Turned it up, I could hear just fine.

It was embarrassment mixed with pleasure.  Not the first time I have felt this way.   So perhaps you can learn from this and save yourself a lot of aggravation.  Don't overlook the obvious and don't be afraid to ask for help.

Good luck

New Member Introductions / Two Steps Forward - Two Steps Back
« on: September 25, 2012, 09:47:05 PM »
This is my first tablet ever.  Problem number 1 in entering text.  I love to type and can do so quickly enough to converse this way, but not on a tablet.  I am resorting to my desktop right now so I can say what I want without thinking about it.  We I use my Nexus I spend more time correcting and editing than I do writing.  I'll get over it, but it is a hurdle.

I've have my Nexus just over a month.  I like all the apps and internet related features, but depending on wifi is frustrating.  I got used to my smartphone (which I don't currently have) and as often as not I can't use my favorite apps.  Even at home my wifi connection is not very robust.  I can't blame this just on the nexus, but still.  It is enough of a problem that it limits my use.  I chose the nexus as an affordable alternative to a 3G or 4G device.  I made my bargain and I can live with, but next time around I'll think twice.

I like the Jellybean OS.  Much better than my old Droid 2. whatever.  I've lived in a Windows world so long I still miss simple things like a tab key, delete key or a few basic function keys.  I'm old, but I'm adapting.  Given time, I'll be good at it.

Just as I'm getting used to and fond of this thing I might have to return or replace it.  My headphone jack has stopped working and this annoys me to no end.  I've come all this way and installed all these apps and now I'll have to take it back and get a new one.  I'm finding myself concerned about the quality of the product.  What might break next.  I'm wondering if this is the best place to put my money, not to mention my time.

Wish I had a happier tale, but I'm not looking forward to setting up my tablet from scratch.  My next stop will probably be Walmart to try to get a replacement.
