So you're heading into the first weekend with your new Nexus 7 (or perhaps still eagerly waiting for its arrival) and you're looking for a fun project you can do to make your new favorite device even cooler.  How about making a 'Smart Case' for 'under 10 bucks'?  How?  What?  Well let's backtrack and minute.  As we discussed a few days ago HERE it was discovered the although unspoken about or printed in any literature the Nexus 7 does in fact have a feature where holding a magnet at a certain location on the front of the device causes the screen to shut off.  We then discovered that Asus does in fact plan to sell a line of 'Smart Covers' but as of today they are unavailable as of yet.  But don't dispair...we've got a solution!

Russell Holly over at Geek.com from a tip by Aaron Kasten used his noggin and realized that by buying an inexpensive 7 inch case for the Kindle Fire he could fashion a very usable 'smart cover' for his Nexus 7.   Here's how it works.  You purchase a case like the YouMee Case from Amazon for only $6.  This case fits the Nexus 7 perfectly leaving all ports and controls uncovered except for the back speaker.   It also has a hand strap and this is where you fasten either with glue or other means your magnet.  When you close the case the magnet on the strap causes your device to turn off its screen...open the cover and presto...the screen lights up again (see the video above).  Pretty tricky eh?

Now the one thing you do have to make sure is that the magnet is the right strength.  Too weak and it won't cause the Nexus 7's screen to go off...and too strong and even with the cover is opened and the magnet is around the back it can cause it to go off unintended.  Apparently a standard 'kitchen' magnet seems to be about the right strength.  So there you have it.  Who's gonna make their own 'Smart Case' this weekend?

SquareTrade is a company that offers warranties for electronic devices including the Nexus 7 and they've just conducted a drop and dunk(drown?) test pitting the Nexus 7 against Apple's top of the line 'New iPad' to see which was more durable under trying conditions and accidents.   The result?  The Nexus 7 trounced the New iPad.  In fact not only did the Nexus 7 withstand both drops from varying heights and submersion in water better than the iPad...it came out functionally unaffected!  Yes, that's right...except for a few scuffs and scrapes on the back and plastic sides the Nexus 7 worked perfectly no matter what the SquareTrade team threw at it.  This compares with the damage sustained by the iPad which included both a cracked screen and the sound going out after the water submersion.

"Wow, that is impressive" - SquareTrade Faceoff Tester upon hearing the Nexus 7 still playing video and audio after being dropped into a bathtub.

Now as we mentioned earlier SquareTrade offers warranties for tablets to cover you in case of accidental damage and the $199 Nexus 7 2 year warranty costs $18.99 which doesn't sound like a bad deal to us.  However we're not sure if there's a deductible in that quote so you'll want to inquire from them to get more information.

Oh yes...one last thing....In addition to winning the Faceoff, SquareTrade is also giving away one Nexus 7 to a lucky winner of a contest they are sponsoring.  Just go to squaretrade.com/faceoff to enter.

Site News / Installed Auto Image Resizer

Installed nCode Image Resizer so large images will be automatically resized in posts.   I set the parameters to 700 width or 800 height as max sizes whichever is greater.  Would prefer people to keep images at 640 x 480 or smaller if possible.  We'll see how the forum looks at these 700/800 max settings but I may adjust them downward if images start to look too cluttered in the boards.   Thanks.

Now that the Nexus 7 Forum is hitting its stride and many of you are playing with your new tablets we thought we'd start to do some 'How To' articles and videos to help everyone become more proficient with their new Nexus 7 tablets and the Jelly Bean OS.   Doing a 'screen grab' or 'screenshot' is one of the most basic and useful skills to learn as it enables you to share pictures, apps, home screens, wallpapers and other things you might want to share on the screen of your Nexus 7 with others.

Now keep in mind taking a 'screenshot' captures the entire image of your screen at once...this includes any apps open plus menus and anything else...the whole shebang.  With the Nexus 7 it's incredibly easy to take a screenshot of what's on your Nexus 7's display and it involves a very simple action of simply holding down the volume down button and the power button at the same time and after a second you'll hear a 'click' and see an animation of your screen's image being taken.  That's it!   The video above form CNET contributor Jason Cipriani shows how it's done.

Now taking a 'screenshot' used to not be so easy.  In the early days of Android in order to grab a shot of your current screen you had to either root your tablet or use a dedicated app.   Now one thing to remember is that the snapshot of your current screen that you get with this 'screenshot' is the full resolution of your tablet's screen...1280 x 800 pixels.

If you plan on sending this image to others or posting in this forum it's a good idea to reduce the size of the image using some kind of imaging program so that the image fits comfortably in the context of where it will be viewed.   Here at Nexus7Forum.com we recommend an image that appears in posts be no larger than 600 pixels wide or 800 pixels high...whichever is greater.  So in this case a 1280 x 800 screeshot should be reduced to 500 x 800 pixels maximum...and preferably smaller.

Let us know what other Nexus 7 ''How To's' you'd like to see and we'll post them in the future.

Well you know it had to happen.  Murphy's Law rears its ugly head and we've got our first smattering of reports about some limited build-quality issues inherent in 'some' Nexus 7 Tablets.  Apparently a small number of early adopters have found that after a few days of use when they lean or press on one side of the front screen of their Nexus 7s that the other side lifts up.   Now to be sure this is a relatively small number of tablets that apparently have this flaw and if it happens to you the most obvious remedy is to simply exercise your 15 day return window and contact Google support so you can get your defective Nexus 7 replaced.

Now using this warranty period is certainly what I would recommend but some more entrepreneurial and hands-on owners have instead decided to figure out a fix on their own so that they wouldn't have to part with their beloved new tablets.   Originally discovered by XDA-Forums member jam10238, the fix involves gently removing the back of the tablet and tightening several loose screws that appear to be at the center of the problem.  Apparently some of the fastening screws in the Nexus 7's suffering from this screen separation issue have only been tightened about 80%.   A few turns of a screwdriver to tighten these followed by the re-attachment of the back cover seems to return the tablet back to new and fix the issue.

Several sites have issued step-by-step instruction on how to perform the fix and how to remove the back cover without marring the perfect finish of your new tablet including Droid-Life.  Now while there's no 'warranty tape' that was seen that would automatically void your warranty if opening the back, common sense tells us that if you scratch up the insides or otherwise break something you might have a hard time getting your tablet replaced under warranty.  For this reason we do recommend that if you have one of the few Nexus 7's with this issue you call them up and get an RMA to get a new unit.   But for those that like to take things into their own hands you can use the fix above.

Now just to put any rumors to the contrary it is very common, in fact almost universal that when a new piece of hardware like a tablet or laptop is first introduced to the market that some manufacturing snafoos inevitably come up with some of the early models.   Asus, the manufacturer of the Nexus 7 has a generally stellar reputation regarding build quality and we wouldn't make any more of this than it is.  Considering the hundreds of thousands of Nexus 7s that have been projected to have been sold during this introduction we've only seen a smattering of a few dozen instances of this screen lifting happening.  In other words it's probably much smaller than 1% of tablets sold.

With that said let us know if any forum members have had this issue.  We haven't seen it in ours and we've asked around to several associates and so far none of us have seen it ourselves.   But if you do let us know, provide some pics and tell us if you plan on sending it back to Google for a replacement or fixing it yourself.

UPDATE:  There are now several reports that the 'fix' above doesn't always work and the screen 'might' become loose again (but others apparently say it fixed theirs).  Therefore, if you do have one of the few tablets with the screen lifting issue we still stand by our recommendation you should contact Google for a replacement tablet.

It seems some readers tipped off  'AndroidPolice' on a neat trick you can do with your Nexus 7 Tablet to get more than just one $25 credit towards Google Play content.   It requires a bit (although not too much) of hassle but if you factory reset your device and log in to a new account during startup you get a new $25 credit.  Each time.

Now keep in mind you'll have to have a credit card attached to each account so theoretically as many different cards that you have you could do this with each.  Now we're not condoning this kind of thing.  We doubt it's Google's intent...although it wouldn't be crazy to think that more than one person could use a tablet and therefore each person could be given their own $25 in free credit to try out apps.   As far as we know there's no $25 per tablet rule that's been stated.  We wouldn't be surprised if Google issues a fix that prevents this sooner than later.

The Taiwan based technology newspaper and website, Digitimes, known for it's dubiously inconsistent but sometimes correct predictions on most asia based hardware manufacturing has an editorial out tonight discussing how Google's Nexus 7 Tablet will affect Android competitors.   Leading off the essay is a statement that industry sources have estimated Google will sell between 2.5 to upwards of more than 3 million Nexus 7 Tablets in FY 2012.   This is the first time we've seen any hard number estimate of how many Nexus 7s might be sold.  Previously a 600,000 number was bandied about as the number of Google's initial order of tablets for the launch.  If accurate the company plans to sell a lot more before year end.

The report goes on to discuss the implications of Google's low priced success with their new 7 inch tablet.   Most competing Android tablet makers are dropping prices in order to compete and the author surmises that an unintended effect of the Nexus 7 might be that hardware manufacturers decide that since Google is making virtually no profit on their device which is priced at just about BOM, that it might not be practical for them to compete in the market.  Now whether this would just be 7 inch tablets or larger 10 inch versions as well is unclear.

But the article goes on to say that the Nexus 7 could very well make  inroads on Apple's iPad but at what cost to other Android tablet makers is unclear.   A successful Nexus 7 tablet could surely entice more app makers to make Tablet-optimized apps and eat market share from Apple and conceivably other hardware vendors could then capitalize on this by making attractive larger form tablets.   You can read the whole article at this link.  So what do you think?  Is the Nexus 7 a blessing or a curse for Android tablet makers?   Will the success of the Nexus 7 expand the market for Android tablets or will it cannibalize it's own Android brothers?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Well we know from the forum that a number of those that ordered their Nexus 7 Tablets were a bit annoyed at the lack of information forthcoming early on from the company regarding when their tablets would arrive.   However,It looks like the company has finally gotten wind of the discontent and is making a real effort to communicate to everyone how things are proceeding in their Nexus 7 shipments.

As you can see in the status update below from the Google Support site in the U.S. and Canada all standalone 8GB Nexus 7 orders have been shipped   In the U.S. those with accessories such as cases, chargers or a Nexus Q included,  your Nexus 7 Tablet will ship this week with overnight shipping but most likely your add-ons will follow shortly after.      Those that ordered 16GB Nexus 7s through July 11 will have their tablets shipped by July 19th the latest again with overnight shipping.    If you ordered after the 11th then your tablet will ship by the end of next week again with overnight shipping.

For further Canada, UK and Australia shipping details check out the quote below.  It seems that 16GB Nexus 7 demand was very heavy and on the Google Play website there's a 3-4 week wait for them.  8GB models on the other hand are listed as 'in stock' so apparently demand for the $199 model was not as heavy or at least the company appears to have ordered more of them.    All of this is of course subject to change as the company has updated their support page several times in the past day.   Hit the link at the bottom to see the most up to date.

If one of the cool features of Jelly Bean and your Nexus 7 Tablet that's gotten you excited is NFC (Near Field Communication) then you're in luck.  Google is currently pushing an update to your new tablet that enables 'Google Wallet' on your device.   So for those not familiar just what is 'Google Wallet'?  In a nutshell, it's a 'smart' 'virtual wallet' that enables you to pay for goods and services simply by tapping your device against an in-store payment transmitter.  It can also be used online at thousands of merchants.   It's basically a way to take you closer to a 'cashless' existence.

With Google Wallet your credit card information is securely stored on your device and in the cloud and your 'Google Wallet' account is also combined with 'Google Offers' that are automatically synced where applicable.   You'll no longer have to sign in individually for all different kinds of online stores and sites.  your 'Google Wallet' account let's you pay and go without the fuss.   For security your 'Google Wallet' account is easily password lockable with all the data encrypted.  Now granted typically 'Google Wallet' is something you'd have on your Android phone but since the Nexus 7 is so light, the company is projecting that enough people will carry their tablet around with them in their backpack or jacket pocket that you can simply use your Nexus 7 as your 'Google Wallet' device.  Of course you can have the service on both your tablet and phone so no matter which you grab before you go out the door you have it with you.   Leave your credit cards and cash at home...just use 'Google Wallet'.

In just as many days, two popular apps for Android have announced new features or additions that make their apps 'tablet-friendly' with specific mention given to Google's Nexus 7.  Yesterday, the popular photo sharing site 'Instagram' announced that front camera support for the Nexus 7 and other tablets was now included in the new addition of their app, version 1.1.7.  Another new addition to the app is the option of posting your tablet creations to Flickr via the app's share menu.  For those not familiar, 'Instagram' let's you easily tweak and customize your photos with all kinds of cool effects that reflect your mood.  It then let's you share these photos with anyone via easy social network integration.  You can grab the latest version of Instagram in the Google Play Store.

This morning Evernote announced that their super popular note taking and organization app, 'Evernote',  had version 4.1 released featuring a totally redesigned tablet interface with swipe navigation and more.  Central to the redesign is the new tablet friendly 'Home' screen below.  You can tap to create a new note or just go directly to your notebook, tags and place view.  Swipe navigation has been added to numerous places througout the app and there's a new 'List View' which shows you all your basic information about a note from one screen including title, tags, text snippets, attachments and the date and more.  We'll have a full write-up of 'Evernote' soon so those unfamiliar can learn about this fantastic tool but in the meantime those looking for the new tabletized version can get it Here.

New 'Home' screen designed for tablets like the Nexus 7

As many of you Android followers know one of the main complaints tablet owners have had is that there just weren't enough tablet optimized applications available for our beloved tabs.  Well it looks like the app community finally believes Google is serious when it comes to tablets and we can confidently say that is in large part to the company's new flagship tablet, the Nexus 7.   So grab these and other tablet-optimized apps to make the most of your tablet's larger 7 inch screen.  We believe these are just the beginning of a wave of new and improved apps for our Android tablets.

Now that many in the forum are starting to receive their Nexus 7s we want to encourage people to share their experience of first opening their tablets with the community.  We also want to transition people away from posting these experiences in the 'shipping' and related threads so we'll start to lock some of those as more and more tablets arrive and we can get down to the fun business of playing with and exploring our tablets!  Please use this thread for all 'first impressions' and 'unboxing'  kinds of comments with your new Nexus 7.    If you need help with something please post on the 'Help' board.  Thanks!

Google posted the above support comment on its Google Play site today regarding shipment of Preorders of their Nexus 7 Tablets.  As we all know many have started to receive their tablets here in the forum with many others having received shipping notification but still awaiting their package.  A few people are still awaiting shipment notification but according to the above statement the company is working as fast as possible in processing shipments.

So apparently those shipments sent out by the 13th have or should be arriving today, the 17th.  Meanwhile others are still being shipped out.  Originally Google had said that U.S. preorders would be shipped by 'three business days' which, if the 13th was the first business day then today would be the third.  Since it can take several days for a shipment to reach its destination, many U.S. preorders will probably be arriving throughout the week depending on your location and distance from a distribution point.

Canadian and UK preorders have also begun to ship but the company is not giving a deadline or estimation of either arrival date or when they will have them all processed.   Most likely they are going in FIFO order (first in, first out) as far as preorders.   So the good news is that the anticipation should turn into exhilaration as more and more new Nexus 7 owners receive their devices.   The bad news is some people still have to wait a few days to receive theirs.  Still...it seems that Google is getting on top of things and getting those tablets out to customers which is a good thing.

An interesting article appears in today's Forbes titled "Mossberg, Pogue, Siegler: Google's Nexus 7 Trifecta Is Complete".  In it, reporter Brian Caulfield discusses the unusual and unprecedented watershed of having three of tech's biggest Apple cheerleaders, Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal, David Pogue of The New York Times and Venture Capitalist/TechCrunch columnist MG Siegler all heap praise on Google's new tablet.

Here's some sample of quotes by the three about Google's new baby:

Pogue-

Quote
[T]he iPad still makes a far more compelling total package (hardware, software, store). But at 9.7 inches, you’ll never fit that puppy into your breast pocket. If something smaller and lighter and far less expensive appeals to you, you’ll be thrilled by the Nexus 7, even if you have to wait awhile before you can find everything you want to read, watch and play on it.

Mossberg-

Quote
“After testing the Nexus 7 for a couple of weeks, I consider it the best Android tablet I’ve used. It’s a serious alternative to both Apple’s larger $499 iPad and to a more direct rival: Amazon’s $199, Android-based, 7-inch Kindle Fire. I prefer the Nexus 7 to 7-inch models from Google partners like Samsung, whose comparable product costs $250.”

and finally Siegler-

Quote
Having used a 7-inch tablet for the past week, I now see it as an absolute no-brainer that Apple has to make an iPad with this form factor as well. Of course, such rumors have been swirling for a while — and now the smoke seems too thick for there not to be a fire. It’s coming — but when it does, Apple will find itself in a position it hasn’t been in for some time: being a second-mover to a good product already on the market

Now interestingly this all coincides with reports of course that Apple is working on a device that former (and now deceased) CEO Steve Jobs said would never happen;  An iPad Mini.  Mr. Caulfield concludes that with all the usual Apple mouthpieces lauding the strengths of the Nexus 7 Apple will have no choice but to enter a market it all but wrote off as unnecessary and in a strange turn of events will be entering a market that it probably didn't intend to until others proved it worthwhile.

So what are your thoughts about a Nexus 7 vs. iPad Mini?  Is the Android onslaught all but inevitablet (after all Android OS phones now outsell iPhones 54% to 36%) or could an iPad Mini put a halt to the Nexus 7's success?   Has Google caught Apple sleeping on the 7 inch tablet watch?
