Chromecast now lets you mirror your screen natively via your Android tablet or phone.  No 3rd party app required.  This was a functionality that was discussed and promised during Google I/O a couple of weeks ago and now they've followed through.  Chromecast apps will now show a 'cast screen' option and Nexus devices will even have the option in the settings menu so you don't have to use the Chromecast app itself.  This is an awesome feature that makes your Android device and Chromecast even more powerful.  I'll be surfing my web and using my big screen tv while controlling it all from my Nexus 7 from now on.  The update is rolling out as we speak and over the next few days in both the Chromecast app via a 1.7 update as well as individual updates for various phones by Samsung, LG, HTC and others.

Last week was Google's 7th annual I/O conference held in San Francisco.  During I/O Google shows all the latest projects it's working on and this year the two 'stars' of the show were Android Wear, Google's version of Android for the wearable platform such as smart watches, and Android L, which is destined to be the next version of Android and features a new graphical language called 'material design'.  Since we know some Nexus 7 owners are more than just casual users and love seeing all the nitty gritty and latest cutting edge stuff from Google we thought we'd link the full Keynote video above for your viewing pleasure.  It's a long video...over two hours...and it covers a lot of ground and touches on other topics such as developments in Chrome, a version of Android targeted to developing markets called 'Android One', Google TV, Chromecast, and much more.  There's also the first look at some hardware for the wrist...three smart watches for the new Android Wear platform.

We have a dedicated site for Android Wear that we invite you all to join as this exciting new platform continues to develop and grow in popularity.  It's at Android Wear Forum.  In the meantime feel free to skip around a bit on the video above if you don't want to see the whole show.  But if you do have the time it's well worth the watch and will fill you in on the direction that Google is taking mobile computing for the current year and you'll also get to see much of the new version of Android that will be appearing on your devices just around the corner.

The Lounge: Off Topic Forum / Nexus 8 by HTC this summer?
« on: April 21, 2014, 01:11:59 PM »
So Digitimes.com is reporting that HTC will be making the next small Nexus tablet and it'll be called the Nexus 8 and released this summer.   Take it with a big grain of salt however cause Digitimes is hit or miss with their rumors/reporting.

As some of you might know, Google introduced a brand new device platform earlier this week specifically for wearable devices.  'Android Wear' is based on the Android OS and features notifications and Google Now functionality along with a specialized SDK for apps, games and more for wearable devices.  Along with the announcement several manufacturers either announced or previewed upcoming Android Wear devices including Motorola, LG, Sony, Fossil, Sony and more.   We've started a brand new forum just for Android Wear and all the devices that will follow at www.AndroidWearForum.com.  Please cme on by and help us build this new exciting community dedicated to the Android Wear, wearable device platform.

Google made a bunch of new announcements over the past couple of days.  Most pertinent to Nexus 7 fans is that their 7 inch tablet will now be made available in 8 additional countries including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden.  Available through the Google Play Store in each respective market, this will give customers the ability, as in other areas where the Nexus 7 is available, the ability to purchase the phone direct without a contract from carriers.   Prices fluctuate depending on country so check with your local market.  The Nexus 5 phone is also available in the same additional markets and the Chromecast has been made available in some of them as well.  Thus we should be welcoming a lot of new Nexus and Android fans to our exclusive fan base!

The Lounge: Off Topic Forum / Malaysia Flight 370
« on: March 14, 2014, 01:12:21 AM »
Any thoughts or theories on what happened to the missing flight 370?

My theory is this:

Most likely scenario is a cockpit fire similar to what happened to EgyptAir Flight B772 in 2011. A massive catastrophic fire in the crew cabin that destroyed the controls and electronics, made the windows impossible to see through, burnt a hole right through the planes metal. The crew would have no way to communicate with the ground…and no way to control the aircraft. The plane would be full of smoke and they’d all basically just be stuck sitting in the airplane praying until it crashed. In the EgyptAir incident they never 100% nailed down the cause but it was suspected to be a bad oxygen hose attachment combined with some short circuit….but the oxygen leak fueled the fire and made it impossible to put out.

In the EgyptAir incident it took place on the ground and it took 90 minutes for firefighters to put the blaze out even though they were on the scene within minutes. If this happened at 35,000 feet…all would be lost.

Here’s a link to a related article on it. It would explain everything…the transponders going out, etc.

Let's hear your thoughts.  It's most likely a tragic story and I'm not hopeful for a happy ending...but I guess anything is possible...

The Lounge: Off Topic Forum / Nexus 8 rumors
« on: March 12, 2014, 10:01:08 PM »
So I'm sure some of you have seen that there's been several reports over the past few weeks about a Nexus 8 tablet that Google is working on.   It's just rumor for now but some of the 'supposed'...and take them with a big grain of salt....details include it being made by LG and having a 64bit intel processor inside.  Any thoughts on this from our forum members?   Would you buy a Nexus 8?   What would a Nexus 8 tablet have to have for you to be interested and do you prefer the Nexus 7 size or the Nexus 8 size in a tablet?

While most of us would agree that Google and Asus did a pretty good job with their 2013 edition of the Nexus 7 tablet, they sure have taken their sweet time in getting any kind of official docking solution into the Play Store.   We're happy to say that wait has ended and we've now got two interesting, albeit pricey options if you're looking for some 'official' dock and charging love.

First up is the official Nexus 7 2013 wireless charging stand model #PW100.  Designed with a cool pyramid-like design it takes advantage of the wireless Qi capability in your Nexus 7 and allows you to charge your tablet by placing your tab in a landscape position wire-free with or without cover. There's an LED to tell you when it's fully charged.  It's a little unclear if the charging dock will work in portrait orientation as well.  We'll probably have to wait until the first units are reviewed to tell. Pricing is $90, which definitely makes this one of the pricier charging stations we've seen...but hey if you want the 'official' one you might want to go for it.

Next up is the Asus Dock for Nexus 7 2013, which lets you position your Nexus 7 in either portrait or landscape orientation and charge your tablet while plugged into the MicroUSB connector.  It also lets your stream video via HDMI to your tv.  The dock is priced at around $80 on Ebay right now, although the 'list' price is around $50.  We've provided links below if you want to grab either of these new accessories as they're not showing up in the Play Store just yet.

While it came out last year the Nexus 10 still is Google's largest Nexus tablet and its 2560 x 1600 display is still state of the art when it comes to Android tablets.  With its Exynos 5250 dual core 1.7GHz Arm processor, 2GB of RAM, 5 mp rear camera and 1.9mp front camera, front firing speakers and long lasting Li-Po 9000 mAh battery...the Nexus 10 is still one of the best 10 inch tablets out there.  Other features include a Mali T604 GPU for smoking graphics, upgradability to the latest Android 4.4 KitKat OS, GPS with GLONASS, NFC, microUSB v2.0, Bluetooth and more.   This is a BRAND NEW unit...not refurbished and has the full Google warranty.  It's a great 'big brother' to your Nexus 7 so grab em while they got em!
