We realize here at Nexus7Forum.com that the Nexus 7 Tablet is going to have a lot of first time tablet owners as well as first time users of Android and Google services joining the fold with some of us more experienced folk.   Thus, we thought we'd start a series of front page articles that highlight some of the really cool features and applications that new inductees to the world of 'Google' might not be familiar with.  One such feature is 'Google  Hangouts'.  So just what are 'Hangouts'?  A 'Hangout' is in its most basic form, a video chat over two or more devices but Google's Hangout feature can also be so much more.

In a Google  Hangout you can have up to TEN people chatting simultaneously with all of you appearing on screen to everyone else.   The 'Hangout' automatically puts the person that is speaking on the large screen with others in small boxes across the bottom and can detect when the conversation changes to change who is on the main screen.   Of course you can manually select who is on the main screen as well.  There's other cool features too like the ability to simultaneously send text messages to all of those in the Hangout or to select a YouTube video to watch on the main screen with all those in the Hangout watching together.

It's group video chatting made easy and the potential applications really are endless from having your entire family all having a Google Hangout at once, 'Hanging Out' with a group of friends or having a business meeting or conference remotely with everyone taking part in a Google Hangout.  Now all of this is free and all you need is a compatible device (like your Nexus 7) and a Google  account.  Oh, but that's not all Google Hangouts can do...

With 'Hangouts On Air' you can live stream broadcast yourself to the world through your Google  Profile, your 'YouTube' Channel or your personal website.  Again, Google  Hangouts makes what used to be a convoluted and/or costly process as simple as a few clicks.  Your 'Hangout' is automatically saved to your 'YouTube' channel and you can 'share' this video with others.  Imagine hosting your own video blog or show that people around the world can watch...all just using your Nexus 7 or laptop and your Google  account...and all at no cost.   Pretty amazing stuff.

Now there's much more to Google  Hangouts.  As part of Google  you can search and see other popular 'Hangouts' that have been made available to the public to watch.  There's also a bunch of fun tools that can be used to liven up a conversation with friends.   We're even going to be experimenting a bit here at the Nexus7Forum.com and host a few Hangouts of our own for forum members and see how we can integrate this into the community.  Wanna learn more?  Head on over to the link below.

So you've scoured this and every other tech site from head to toe.  You've poured over the specs of your pre-ordered Nexus 7 so much you've got every last detail from the Tegra 3 to the dual mics to the IPS display's manufacturer leaving ghost images on your eyeballs.  Well...surprise!  You won't find THIS feature written anywhere officially by Google in any of the materials we've seen yet for the Nexus 7.   It seems one curious owner of a Google I/O Nexus 7 stumbled upon a magnetic 'Smart Cover' Sensor when playing around with his device and a magnet.  As you can see in the video above when a magnet is held to the lower left corner of the device while the screen is on it turns the display off.

Smart Covers On Asus Site

Now there's no word from Google if this is an official feature we can expect when using one of their official cases although if you scroll down to the covers on this Asus page it DOES call it a 'Smart Cover'.  Did Asus sneak a feature in there undocumented by the big G?  Does this mean the Nexus 7 is in for a copyright fight with Apple to use such a technique?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments.  Yay or Nay on the 'Smart Cover'?

Staples is also offering the $25 credit and Transformers movie if I recall right.  Not sure if this is a universal thing or not.

It's becoming somewhat of a tradition for major mobile announcements to have a 'Ninja Unboxing Video' and there's certainly no mobile debut more befitting a Ninja tribute than the Nexus 7.  Starring Georges St.Pierre (GSP), UFC Mixed Martial Arts Champion, as 'Dr Paul' and a host of Ninja combatants in a fictional show named 'Get Comfy With Dr. P', the whole setup soon devolves into a Ninja slamming, Nexus 7 fighting, free-for-all.   The whole film was animated and Directed by Patrick Boivin and he made sure the set was outfitted with all sorts of Android memorabilia including jelly beans, android toys and some easily throwable furniture.

So what are some of your ideas if you were to make a Nexus 7 unboxing video?  Anyone gonna surprise us with their own when they get their Nexus 7?

Nexus 7 General Discussion / Re: Why 7 ??

Oh, I don't know that you two are necessarily disagreeing.  It all depends on which perspective you are coming from; a prospective buyer or current owner.  A new buyer wants the latest and greatest most up to date specs and software but once you make that purchase and are now an owner you want that device to be able to be relevant for as long as possible.

I think tablet technology is reaching a point now, similar to what happened to PCs about a decade ago, which is they'll run most software available for at least 5 years or even longer but if you have a very recent machine it will perhaps have certain apps that can take advantage of the increased power.

I'll use an example of playing and/or editing 1080p video.  The vast majority of Windows PCs from 5-10 years ago can run all the basic Office suite and financial applications like Microsoft Word, excel etc and also most other software and even most games if lower resolution or frame rates are reduce.  But if you want to play or edit full 1080p video on you PC typically only more recent machines with the latest and fastest processors and enough ram can handle it.

Does that make all older PCs obsolete if it runs everything or 90% of what a person uses it for?  Not sure that it does.  I have a 1st generation iPad that still runs 95% of apps available.  It doesn't have a retina display or camera but I don't think of it as obsolete...just not cutting edge anymore.

No, the ram inside is not user upgradeable hence why many are purchasing the 16GB to begin with.

Because the screen is 7 inches measured diagonal. :)

iSuppli, a company well known for doing teardowns and providing estimates of both component costs and manufacturing has told 'AllThingsD' their preliminary results for the costs of the Nexus 7 and they come in quite a bit lower than the $184 we saw from UBMTechInsights last week.   According to Andrew Rassweiler, the leader of the teardown team for iSuppli, the 8GB Nexus 7 costs $151.75 and the 16GB $159.25 with the difference being an additional $7.50 for the extra 8GB of memory.   When marketing and distribution costs are factored in the company estimates that Google will break even on the 8GB model and make a small profit on the 16GB one.  Mr. Rassweiler offered:

Quote
“Like Apple, Google realizes it can boost its profit margin by offering more memory at a stair-step price point. It’s getting $50 more at retail for only $7.50 more in hardware cost, which sends $42.50 per unit straight to the bottom line.”

Some other interesting tidbits from iSuppli's teardown include some comparisons with Amazon's Kindle Fire.  Apparently the display in the Nexus 7's IPS display cost a bit more ($38) than the Kindle Fire's ($35) non-IPS.  The camera on the Nexus 7 adds about $2.50 and the Nexus 7 also sports an NFC chip which the Kindle Fire lacks.  Of course the Nexus 7 also features the Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core processor while the Kindle Fire has a last generation dual core.  One last hardware feature that stood out was the combination gyroscope/accelerometer by Invensense.  Typically these are separate chips but in this case they are combined.

Now an explanation for the Nexus 7 component cost discrepancy of $30 between the UBMTechInsights estimates and iSuppli is probably due to the fact that TechInsights never actually did a tear down of the tablet and only guessed at components without having one in hand.  The iSuppli estimate is far more accurate.   So it looks like Google is making a small profit overall on the hardware although they are certainly looking to make most of their profit by selling content from their Google Play store.  We'll have pictures and more details when they become available with the release of the full iSuppli report.

You can link to XDA-Developers as long as it's only an occasional thing.   We do in general like to limit links to other forums due to search ranking purposes (outgoing links can hurt rank) but once in awhile is ok.

Oh, I think sound quality with headphones will actually be very good.  I wouldn't worry about that at all.  In fact, even without headphones the Nexus 7 has stereo speakers and while they're not gonna give you much bass they'll do in a pinch.   Several companies have also announced audio docks are coming out with high quality amplified speakers that you can 'dock' the Nexus 7 into and enjoy movies on.  You might want to look into one of these if you're going to be doing a lot of movie/tv watching and music playing.

1138
There's a few stories around the web that are noting the same frustration with the lack of exact ship date so let's see if Google issues any kind of announcement or comment in the next day or two.  From what I can tell by reading a number of articles the earliest anyone is shipping is the 12th..which here in New York is the day after tomorrow.   Staples is stating 1-3 shipping days so that could mean tablets arriving the 13th-15th.   I wouldn't be surprised myself if those that ordered tablets from Google Play start receiving theirs before the weekend but they'll probably be coming from a number of different distribution centers scattered across the country so some may receive theirs a day a day or two before others etc.  I guess we'll all just have to wait patiently and see how it plays out.

Several tech sites are reporting that the Nexus 7 devices received by developers during Google I/O are currently receiving an Over The Air (OTA) update to their Android operating software bringing the tablet's version to 4.1.1.   This is a minor update with the most notable change being the addition of 'Google Wallet' to the device.   This should allow Nexus 7 owners to more easily use NFC (Near Field Communications) mobile payments.   While no change log has been issued by Google outlining the specifics improvements the company has issued a statement that the update includes some performance tweaks so we can probably expect even snappier performance.

Of course this is all normal and it's good to see Google is actively improving the OS.  Us 'normal' people that receive our Nexus 7's in the next week or two can expect to receive this and any other OTA update soon after we fire up our tablets.  Having the most up-to-date and 'latest and greatest' version of the Android Operating System is one of the perks of owning a 'Nexus' device afterall.

1140
As long as they honor the dates they said in the beginning which was the 19th-25th as I recall I'll be happy.   I wouldn't be surprised if that's a conservative estimate and if many start receiving their Google Play ordered Nexus 7's before that.  I can understand a little frustration if Staples and Office Depot get shipments this Thursday if that rumor is true and our units ordered off the Google site arrive a few days or a week later, but it's not the end of the world.  A month from now we'll all be happily trading stories about our new tablets.  Let's keep things in perspective and civil. :)
