Welcome to the Nexus 7 Forum Brady!

Yes, I think 'Majel' was the name they used when it was in development...and yes, named after Gene 'Star Trek' Roddenberry's wife, Majel Barrett-Roddenberry.   But they just called it 'assistant' at the google I/O.

During Google's I/O conference last week where the Nexus 7 and Android 4.1 were both introduced, we got a brief look at the new voice activated search 'assistant' in Jelly Bean which many have compared to Apple's 'Siri'.  While I was impressed during the demo at the conference the above video by Android Community's Cory Gunther really blew me away.

There's no doubt that Google's 'Assistant' sounds much more human than Apple's 'Siri' and the ability to understand relatively rapid speech with little or no errors is also impressive.   Now obviously this is a technology that is continuing to evolve rapidly and as Google improves the technology we can expect more and more Artificial Intelligence features to make its way into the new 'Assistant'...which since I can't find any other name given to her I've chosen to name 'Gabby'.  ;D   What do you think? Is gonna be a fun feature to play around with or what?  Seems to blow 'Siri' out of the water, no?

Note: (While Cory calls this 'Google Now' in the video, that is actually a different feature that I will go into in a future article. This video is the voice actuated search 'assistant')

As many of you know in order to keep the cost of the Nexus 7 down to $199 8GB/$249 16GB they had to make a few sacrifices with the hardware.  We generally think they chose the right priorities in giving us a Tegra 3 and IPS screen among other goodies but one of the things that didn't make the cut was a rear camera, although they did include a 1.3mp front camera for video chatting via Skype or Gchat among others.

But what if you want to use that front camera to snap a photo let's say to upload to your instagram or Facebook account?  Well Google didn't include a dedicated camera app in the pre-installed software for the Nexus 7 figuring you wouldn't use the front camera for that but thanks to developer Paul O'Brien now you have that option.  Paul has just uploaded a simple and straightforward free dedicated camera app onto the Google Play site at the link below.   It's a standard app so you don't need any kind of root access or anything...you just install the app.  It let's you take both still pictures and video so it's a welcome addition.  Thanks Paul!

Nexus 7 General Discussion / Re: Virus/malware
« on: July 05, 2012, 01:33:23 PM »
I stand corrected!  I haven't had any virus/malware issues in Android but apparently there is 'some' risk so we'll just keep an eye on it.   Something for us to further discuss once we get our Nexus 7s in our hands!

Fortunately, one of the nice things about Android is that there isn't a virus/malware problem as of yet so I doubt it will be necessary to have an app or software protecting against that on your Nexus 7.   What the future holds...we'll see... :)

The 'Google Actions' feature you describe where the Nexus 7 mic samples sounds continuously to see if you say 'Google' could be used in some interesting ways.  Do we know if this could be used to initiate a hands-free Skype session?  So you'd just say 'Google, call mom'...and it would start up Skype and make the call?

Nexus 7 Wallpapers and Themes / Re: Live wallpaper on N7
« on: July 05, 2012, 10:52:20 AM »
I'm sure Live Wallpapers should work perfectly fine on Jelly Bean just like they do with Ice Cream Sandwich.  Don't see any reason why they wouldn't.

All great observations Samalex!   I should add there is also Keyboard support via the microUSB in addition to the mouse support.  I also posted a couple of days ago bout the 'USB Audio feature that makes for some interesting possibilities as well:  http://nexus7forum.com/index.php?topic=67.0

I plan on doing an article about the Nexus 7 microUSB capabilities...what it can and can't do out of the box....what we can expect to be able to do through rooting, etc in the next couple of days.   If you stumble upon any other 'finds' let me know!

Nexus 7 Polls / Do You Plan On Rooting Your Nexus 7?
« on: July 05, 2012, 07:07:00 AM »
Do you plan on rooting your Nexus 7? Do you plan on sticking with the 'out of the box' OS with no changes?  Perhaps you're curious about rooting but just don't know enough about it or feel confident or 'tech savvy' enough to do it yourself?  Let us know your thoughts.  We're curious what percentage of forum members plan on rooting compared to those that will stick with the stock Nexus 7 as it comes from the factory.

One of the things that we thought was smart of Google when they introduced the Nexus 7 last week was to launch their new 7 inch baby not only in the United States but also nearly simultaneously in the UK, Canada and Australia.  In other words just about the entire English speaking world.   Well those release dates still hold but one bit of info that is making its way around the web today has to do with a difference in content that those non-U.S. nationals will have access to when they fire up their Nexus 7s and head on over to the Google Play store.

It seems that at least for now, tv shows, music and magazines will not be available outside of the United States.  In the UK the Nexus 7 order page says that users will have access to 'thousands of movies' and the 'world's largest collection of ebooks'.   The same goes for the Canadian and Australian sites.   A rep from Google when questioned on this by CNET responded:

"Currently, the U.K. [Google Play] store offers apps, movie rentals, e-books and devices. We're clearly eager to expand this in time, but currently, that's the offering in the U.K,"

Now while you might need to get your music, tv shows and mags elsewhere for now, all the countries mentioned above still will have access to the over 600,000 apps, movies, ebooks and games available in Google Play.   We're not entirely certain why tv, music and magazines aren't being made available outside of the U.S. at this time but it probably has to do with the complications of getting the licensing sorted out as well as the differences in content offerings in each nation.

So any UK, Canadian or Australian forum members care to share your thoughts on this?  Does it change the value proposition to you and your opinion of the Nexus 7 or are these minor issues that won't affect your purchase?  Let us hear your input in the comments!

One of the things that struck some as a bit odd at first when they introduced the Nexus 7 last week at Google I/O was that Google chose to use the portrait orientation 'phone' UI vs. the landscape 'Tablet' UI as the default setup for their 7 inch tablet.   In fact Google went so far as to prevent the home screen from rotating when the tablet is turned on its side which basically forces you to use it in portrait mode for functions on this home screen.  Many have since surmised that Google did this mainly because it was targeting a consumer audience that would use the Nexus 7 more in the easy to 'hold with one hand' 'portrait' orientation.

But what if you're more 'tablet savvy' and you prefer the landscape 'tablet' UI more like the one you see on Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich 10 inch tablets?  Well XDA-Developers Member SladeNoctis discovered that this was entirely possible if you changed the LCD density property in the build.prop file.  This moves the notification bar from the top of the screen to the lower right corner and tweaks the layout of the home screen and navigation toolbar as well. Now in the future as Google implements 'Jelly Bean' in more tablet devices they might put an option in the settings that would give users the ability to do this without rooting their devices and changing any code.  However for now you'll have to have a rooted Nexus 7 to make this change.

Luckily, rooting your Nexus 7 is fairly easy to root.  You can then follow SladeNoctis' Instructions and presto!  You'll have a landscape home screen for your device.  Now there are some caveats to doing this.  First off while almost everything works fine in this mode it appears that Google is still tweaking some of the graphic elements and thus you'll see some slight anomalies like some text and pictures looking smaller and some apps 'might' look a little off and not be optimized for this orientation yet.  In time we expect these issues to be corrected though and they shouldn't interfere with the tablet's normal use.

So what do you think?  Will you want to root your Nexus 7 and make the changes to use your Nexus 7 in landscape 'tablet' mode?   Let us know your thoughts in the comments.   I've pasted some examples of the 'tablet' and 'portrait' versions of the same screen so you can see the difference more easily below.

I think what he's asking about is a flash drive with a microUSB connector...not full sized USB.   So that no adapter is needed.   Personally, I haven't seen these but they've got to exist I would think.  There's of course a ton of USB flash drives to choose from like Drew said.  Once we get our Nexus 7s rooted and have StickMount installed this would be the easiest way to save/upload files to the device I should think.
