I never received the system upgrade notification, so I downloaded a factory stock image and installed it.  Previous OTA notices came to my stock but rooted N7s.  Google apparently found a way to identify rooted devices, so we didn't get the OTA on this go-around.

Smart Tools Co.  has a free Sound Meter app that should work with the N7. I paid for the full Smart Tools app, and its Sound function works with my old and new version N7s.

You could unlock, root and try to install gapps. Or flash a stock ROM. I would run a custom recovery and make a full nandroid backup first in case of incompatibility. I'm guessing it is the same Asus tablet later branded the nexus 7.

Asus makes a number of 7 inch tablets. The About Tablet query will tell us a lot.

32 GB motherboards are frequently found for $50 used on eBay.  Beats the *&^% out of Asus' $215 estimated repair cost.

Glad to hear it went smoothly.  You're more capable than you give yourself credit for.

Did you ever check if it's seen as an APX device?  Connect it to one of your PC's rear USB 2.0 ports, and look at it in the Devices and Printers portion of Control Panel.  Power it on and off. If it's APX, a $50 motherboard will fix it.

Another bug fix OTA.  My Google OTA update was received yesterday on my daughter's N7 (2012), and it worked fine on hers, except for losing root.  My 2012 N7 never received the OTA.  Mark Skippen's Unified Android toolkit has the 4.4.4 factory image available, so I installed 4.4.4 on my N7 without formatting data, and didn't lose any data.  I lost root, but regained it on both 2012s with the toolkit.

Your gmail account email or password is corrupted.

Add a new Google account in >Settings >Accounts >Google, and delete the old account.  Then add the original account back.

Or do a factory data reset in >Settings >Backup & reset >Factory data reset.  Then set up your correct Google account during initial setup.

ES File Manager. Many other advertised apps don't work, or nickel and dime you with added cost.

Hi tudorgal,

Your problem isn't a Nexus 7 problem.  It's actually a Google Chrome problem.  Try to create a new Chrome browser user profile following one of the links here.

Welcome Gibeyerson,

First generation N7 has a silvery bezel around its perimeter.  Second generation lacks that, and has a camera on the back side near he power button.

You'll have to experiment with slideshow apps to find one that has the features you want.
