Nexus 7 Accessories / What accessories have you ordered/received already?« on: July 11, 2012, 07:43:03 PM »
I've already received a window mount car holder for offline road map gps navigation use, and an OBDII Bluetooth (ELM327) adapter. I'll use this with the Torque app for hypermiling. A hard case is in shipment from Amazon, and I've got a 12V to 5V USB car charger laying around somewhere.
What have you bought in anticipation of the arrival of your N7? 827

I've got a hard case ordered, but I won't send it back. I'll glue a magnet to it, or drill a hole in the case cover & insert a magnet in the hole.

Nexus 7 General Discussion / Re: Maps on the Nexus 7« on: July 11, 2012, 02:52:06 PM »
If the Google offline maps app keeps a skeletal database of major highways and exits, I can get by with one or two 10 mile diameter destination databases in device storage. The original Garmin Streetpilot did that, with its 128 MB of non-ROM storage.
My trips are typically 500-600 miles of driving each day. I only need a gps nav app to keep me on route to my destination city, and detailed map data to get me to a motel, restaurant, and other points of interest once I'm the destination city. I suspect offline maps will do it. We'll see. More disturbing are recent comments about Google Maps crashing. It seems Google can't keep one of its flagship programs functional. 829
Nexus 7 Vs. The Competition / Re: Nexus 7 vs. Galaxy Tab 2 7.0« on: July 11, 2012, 01:11:11 AM »
I'm guessing Google Maps' offline version contains a bare-bones database, much like the original Garmin Street Pilot gps nav system. That skeletal database should allow me/us to drive 600 miles on major highways while identifying all the exits. The 10 mile area data download is probably true for cities. Areas with sparse roads, like Kanab, UT, could support a much larger area.

I'm looking at 600 mile days driving without wi-fi, before I can figuratively throw my gps nav system out the window.

Nexus 7 Ordering and Shipping / Re: Ship Date?« on: July 09, 2012, 09:33:22 PM »
When my discussion with the Google agent ended, he asked if there was anything else he could do for me. I said no, unless he could tell me the ship date. He said he wished he could do that, and added he's waiting to get his N7, himself.
I should be OK with 8 GB. If it's not enough, I'll give it to one of my kids, & upgrade to a 16 GB model. 832
Nexus 7 Apps / Re: Nexus 7 Apps You're Most Looking Forward To Using« on: July 09, 2012, 11:22:55 AM »
My interests are rather specific.
Sky Safari Pro for astronomy Sibley Birds of North America for birding identification Torque Pro for fuel consumption displays for hypermiling Google Maps or similar to replace GPS 833
Nexus 7 Ordering and Shipping / Re: Ship Date?« on: July 09, 2012, 11:08:40 AM »
I called Google this morning to ask about changing my pre-order from an 8 GB model to 16 GB. The guy I talked to looked up my 6/29 pre-order date, and said he can't change my order, because it's too close to the ship date, and I'd lose my position in the queue. He said I could make another pre-order, and refuse delivery of my existing pre-order.
This hints that N7 shipping is imminent. I guess I'll stick with the 8 GB. The apps I plan to load + Google pre-loads should still leave me with 3-4 GB free storage. 834

I find CR reviews to be short on objective detail and long on subjective impressions. Still, they mentioned one shortcoming of the N7,
So, is there a fix for the inability of the Nexus 7 to display a full screen in landscape mode, or is this not a problem? 836
Nexus 7 Polls / Re: What feature are you most excited about in the Nexus 7 Tablet?« on: July 03, 2012, 01:30:01 AM »
It's the combination of newest OS, quad-core processor, gps/compass/accelerometer & gyroscope, all for the price of a Nook or Fire.

Nexus 7 Polls / Re: What do you plan to use your Nexus 7 for MOST?« on: July 03, 2012, 01:15:22 AM »
IDK, because I've never owned a tablet before. I doubt I'll do much web surfing w/a 7" screen & no keyboard.
I might run a road map/gps app, although I own gpses for each car, & 7" is a big gps. My intentions are to run Sky Safari Pro (an astronomy app), iBird (a bird identification app) and an OBD-2 data logging app. 839
Nexus 7 Accessories / Car charger?« on: July 01, 2012, 10:43:54 AM »
Will any micro USB charger work? I mixed up a Tom-Tom GPS charger with a Garmin GPS, or v.v., and kept putting the GPS in hibernation. What will the Nexus 7 require to charge it while driving? I gather it will ship with an AC charger and a cable.

Hi all,
I'm a retired tinkerer. 15 years ago, I was a national computer expert for a 10,000 person federal agency. Now I'm just an apps user with some programming knowledge, totally new to Android, tablets, et al. My hobbies are birding, astronomy, and hypermiling. I've averaged 49.5 mpg for over 33,850 miles in a boxy non-hybrid Scion xB. I hope to learn a lot, and contribute where I can.
