New Nexus 7
« on: September 12, 2012, 10:23:54 AM »
Arriving Friday. Dumb question perhaps but will all the Android apps from my phone automatically install themselves on the tablet if I have Google account backing them up?

First off, welcome to the forum jonv. Setup your tablet with the same Gmail account that you have on your phone, then go to Google Play then My Apps and swipe left or right until you see all and all of your purchased apps should be listed unless they are not compatable with your Nexus 7.

Thank you. Naturally I do intend to use the same Google account.  So I might end up listing my purchased apps but having to manually install each as well as my freebies one by one?  Could be worse!  And I assume having Titanium backups won't be of any help.  I was just woindering if it might be as easy as when I wipe for a phone ROM and Google just puts stuff back the way it was.

I have never experienced Google automatically installing my apps when changing to a new device and have always had to list them and install one by one.

I think apps only auto-install on the same device, not sure if it's the device ID or the devices fingerprint that is used but none of my phone apps were installed on my N7 when I activated my N7.
Honestly, I wouldn't of wanted them to auto-install. I do have some of the same apps on both devices but some either don't work on the N7, don't work properly or I just plain wouldn't want them on my N7...

Oh, welcome to the Nexus 7 Forums jonv.

That makes sense.  It's been a while sence I switch switched ROMs on my phone but it seemes like Google would SLOWLY put back my apps yet I was usually impattient enough that I used Titanium Restore to do it quicker.  I could be wrong and my memories incorrect for sure.  I don't mind picking and choosing the apps for the N7.  If I'm correct in my asumption, I am assuming then that a purchased app is lisenced for all Android devices using Google Play without rebuying.  Although I am seing several apps have a "tablet" version which may imply another purchase, right?

I've found it pretty hit and miss as to whether apps auto-install after flashing a ROM. I just flashed AOKP JB on my S2 and my apps didn't auto-install from GP but they did last week when I flashed CM10.
Usually I cancel them anyway and restore with Titanium, it's much quicker to do a batch restore when flashing between ROM's than waiting for GP to install them especially if there a bad data signal.

As for apps on your phone being the same as those for a tablet, it's probably best to install them through GP because any apps that are compatible with the N7 will say on the application information screen, "This application is not compatible with your device".
Some apps do have second versions for tabs but most are multi compatible, the only app I can think of off the top of my head that has two versions is Swift key but the phone version does actually work despite a warning once you open the app. I'm sure there are others but nothing I use that I remember.

Yep, Swiftket was one of the apps I was thinking about that had two versions.  The worst "offender" is Sling Player which appears to want another @29.99 for a tablet version different than the @29.99 "mobile" version not to mention the $29.99 iPad version that I have. I had always heard that they charged for versions from different store fronts i.e. Google Play vs. Aplle Store but I sure was hoping the Andorid would share a license across the phone and N7. :(

Sling media. If their customer support wasn't so bad then maybe they wouldn't get such a hard time for the $ of  their apps and incompatibility issues.

Ditto.  When Sling Boxes first came out, I was an early adopter and became an evangelist for the technology.  Technology that just worked and lived up to the hype and promise which was rare back then and still now.  As the years have gone by I've had to upgrade my hardware box (notto mention exchange it a half-dozen times) as well as rebuy the software several times as I've changed mobile devices.  They've beeen anything but future proof yet I still love the idea of place-shifting.
