How to open files transferred from PC

Hi, I have transferred some files from my laptop (Open Office with the ".odt" file extension) via USB cable.
While still hooked up, the files are readable.
When disconnected, the files are visible in "File Manager" but will not open. I have changed the file extension to .txt  or  .doc  but it doesn't help. When tapping the files, I have tried to open them as Text, then open with Kingsoft Office. Then I get the message: "This file format is not supported."
I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.....
Can anybody help? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Open the file in Open Office on your computer and select "save as" and change the file type to doc and then transfer the file to your Nexus 7. As an alternative, you could try searching Google Play, for an app that will open the Open Office file type, "odt".

 Your advice to "save as" is great.  I saved them as PDF Files and everything is working well. Thank you!!
This way I also converted my music files to .m4a  files, although I downloaded "Converterlite" to do it.  It works very well.
