What does it take to connect to an Ethernet (rj45 ) network, without using wireless?

I have heard that if you are rooted, you can use an Ethernet to USB adapter with an OTG cable. Can anyone confirm?

You can plug in certain USB ethernet adapters using a OTG adapter without any other requirements.  Other models will need drivers installed via Root access
