Nexus 7 Screen Glitches
« on: March 16, 2013, 06:51:22 PM »
Hi all,

I'm not sure if anyone else has posted about this on the forum but I just did a quick search and it doesn't return anything, so here goes:

I may as well lay out some history: this device hasn't been exposed to any water, dropped, sat on, rooted, taken apart, modified or anything similar - otherwise the problem would have had an obvious answer!!

So this evening my Nexus bleeped to say it was out of battery and turned itself off (as it always does) so I plugged it in and waited for the screen to come back on to say it was charging only to see that the screen was black with loads of white lines shooting across it (almost like a half-made connection with the screen connector inside). So I swiftly unplugged it and plugged it back in again. No problem.

This time rather than waiting for the screen to come on I held down the volume and power button to go into the device information screen (I can't remember what it's called!) and I selected the "start" option. My Nexus booted fine - it said it was charging (if only on 0%) and the screen was responding. Then the screen glitched out again and became completely distorted and the speaker was making electrical noise. So, naturally I unplugged it.

Now I thought to eliminate the power adapter as being the cause of the issue (I was using the Nexus power brick supplied with the unit) so I used my Nexus USB cable in my Nokia Lumia power brick and still saw the same problem. Okay, maybe it was the USB cable? Nope, same problem. So I came over to my PC and plugged in there and I'm still getting the same problem.

All I can notice when it's plugged in and the screen is glitching is that the Micro USB connector makes an odd whistle.

I'll try and get some photos uploaded when I can get a decent shot of the issue.

Does anyone have any ideas what this might be?

Thanks for reading and any help in advance :)

I've heard of the n7 reboot looping when the battery gets low. I never let mine get below 10% thinking a full discharge and charge shortens battery life more than keeping it topped off. Moot point. Try to turn off the tablet and let it charge a bit before restarting, maybe the 2.1 amp of the charger can't deal with a full charge and a boot at the same time? Usb whistle may be dirty contacts arcing? Spray non lube contact cleaner on the cord end and insert it a few times to clean.

This happens sometimes when the battery is totally drained. With Nexus off. Plug in. Hold power and volume down till bootloader opens. While in boot loader , use volume up down to get to shut down in the menu. Shutdown. In a few..You should then see a charging symbol. Let the nexus charge a while and you should be cool. Start as normal when you have let the battery charge for a little while.

I've read he best recharge strategy for the lithium batteries in our N7s is to recharge them at 40%, and not interrupt the recharge.  0% is crazy.
