Second, separate contact list?
« on: March 18, 2013, 11:58:28 AM »
Contacts in the nexus 7 are in the app they call People.
When I imported a very large address book into People it imported everything into the all contacts section - which I did not want. So I wiped the contact data using Ti backup, rebooted and restored an earlier backup which brought things back to normal.

Is there a way to have a second, separate address book which I could access when needed but which is not part of the main address book?

Or, alternatively import directly into a separate specified group instead of the all contacts?

Thanks.

Not sure I understand how this provides a second separate address book.

One simple way is to setup 2 separate Gmail accounts and you will have an address book for each one. In contacts you can select which one you want to display or both of them.

Ah I see like a sub contact list. I agree. Use another email address.

I have a similar need and discovered a way to do it and this method has more potential than just a separate address book.

An address book is just a form of database. I found a couple of databases on Google play. The one I like is SailForms, a very easy to use customizable flat db. I installed it and found I could import a csv file exported from a Thunderbird address book and SailForms automatically created the necessary fields. VoilĂ ! A separate address book. Don't know if it can be made to dial or connect with an email client which would be an added bonus.

Of course this db app has numerous other possibilities.

Hope this helps the op and maybe others too.

And of course a simple spreadsheet app would work too.

I think in the people app you can import into a group but all contacts shows every group contact merged. You can create new groups, besides the family, friends, and business.

Change to the group before you import the vcard file (.vcf). You can also hit the star on a contact to put it into the favorite group. To put a contact already imported into a group, change to the group, add new, start typing the name and choose from a drop list. Or tap the contact, edit(pencil icon), scroll down and click groups and check the boxes of the groups you want that contact in. Haven't found an easy way to mass edit into groups, my contacts were automatically put into a group labeled 'imported'. But they were never organized in the first place.

It might be easiest to sort the contacts on the computer, then export the vcf(s) to the tablet's internal storage over usb, then import into the group(s) you want.

I was looking for a separate address book because I wanted to keep it separate from an app that could accidentally sync with Google. I know I can turn sync off but still feel more comfortable with an app not connected with Google. So this is something I will definitely try. Thank you engineer.

For private syncing I am exploring the "owncloud" app. Anybody using it?
