I get the whole unlock and root thing...My question is do I install a backup app, do a backup, unlock and root, reinstall the backup app and then reinstall  the backup?
...i.e. How do I get the backup reinstalled?

Backup apps like Titanium Backup only work on a rooted device, but you can use the Root ToolKit listed in Our Forum's Guide to Rooting and make a full Nandroid backup or just backup your apps and data and then restore the apps and data after rooting. Personally, if you do not have a lot of in App content, like game data, and you use Gmail or Exchange email like me, I find it easier to root and then reload my apps from Google Play. If you are like others and prefer to save you apps and data with one of the available rooting toolkits, you should have no problem, but there is always the outside chance that you cannot restore from the backup, so if there is any critical data on your tablet, I suggest you use a dual backup plan, where at minimum you 1) backup apps and data and 2) create a nandroid backup.

Unlocking will wipe all your data. You might want to backup anything you need or want like maybe pics you took by plugging into a computer and dragging into a folder. Apps and purchases are stored by Google so they can be reinstalled. Unlocking, is the first step. Rooting second and installing a custom recovery, third. Custom recovery or a toolkit  what you use to make your "Nandroid" backups and  flash them to your Nexus if needed. After rooting you will be able to install some root only apps like Titanium backup which will allow you to backup your apps and install them all at once in "batches" if needed.
I'm sure there will be some more advice coming as to some tips and tricks to help you on your journey.

The safest way is to use the root toolkit to pull a copy of the backup to your PC. And/or use Titanium backup, as it will reinstall itself from an update.zip file that's supported by both CWM & TWRP.

Thank you...this will help me...It is brand new and I have nothing installed...I've only turned it on once.

Once you're rooted & have your wallpaper, widgets, & apps set up on your home screen, then do a Nandroid backup with your custom recovery (CWM or TWRP). Better if you push it from your PC & pull a copy to the PC.

Thank you...this will help me...It is brand new and I have nothing installed...I've only turned it on once.

Then just click on the link to the rooting guide mentioned earlier and you will easily achieve root, if you want the advantages of a rooted Nexus 7.

I prefer to have a Nandroid of the stock conditions as well.  When you unlock, it wipes data. After that, I root, install custom recovery, then immediately perform a nandroi of an absolutely stock device that can be used to restore system info if anything it tampered and prevents successful updating along the Android version path. I prefer to keep this nandroid on my device, but they can easily exceed 1gb so its a choice whether or not you need the space.

Most of us use the Nandroid backup option in the root toolkit, which does all the thinking for you. But you can send adb commands from your PC.
