Switching from Kindle Fire to Nexus...
« on: November 25, 2012, 03:08:55 PM »
I bought a Kindle Fire HD. I quickly became very angry that I was forced to use inferior software products when it came to launcher, browser, keyboard, etc.

So I took it back and got a Nexus, and am much happier with it.

But a few issues...

1. I bought some seasons of shows on my Kindle Fire. Are those gone now? Is there ANY way I can get them to my Nexus now?

2. Amazon has really hacked me off here. I would like to de-amazon my life and wholly embrace the Google ecosystem. Is there any way to remove the DRM on all the books and music I've bought from Amazon and move it over to the Google Play reader/music player?

3. Does google have a cloud drive like Amazon's?

4. Does Google have anything resembling Amazon Prime, with free books and videos?

1) Not familiar with video on Kindle, but I am betting it is streamed.

2) If you have access to the ebook files, Calibre can convert the KF8 format.

3) Google Drive is your alternative

4) Since the Nexus 7 allows you to choose many different apps supporting many ebook and video farmats, you have a wide variety of free sources.

Since you no longer have the Kindle, you will be at Amazon's mercy, when it comes to accessing your purchased media.

I have books that are  azw files and drag them into the kindle app. Works like a charm. Question is do you have access to them?

I can get my kindle books on the nexus through the kindle app. I was just wondering how to move them to google play. The whole calibre debug process looks like a pain, and frankly, it appears amazon books are cheaper than google books anyway, so I'll prolly keep buying there.

The two seasons of tv I bought are just gone now.

That is exactly why I got rid of the kindle. I could tell with how restrictive they are that I didn't want to get too deep into their ecosystem, or I could never leave.

Why move them to Google play?
Isn't part of the beauty of breaking free from slavizon the freedom to do what you choose?

Sure. I just don't like doing business with a company like that, and would rather have all my books in one place.

once you have the books on your Nexus 7 from the cloud plug the n7 into a laptop or pc and simply drag n drop the azw or mobi etc files into whatever folder you use with your general purpose ereader.  You can also use a general purpose file app for this but using the 'pc' lets you do the same with books/files on the Kindle as well.

Few books sold thru amazon actually have copy protection but for anything that does, you will need to run them thru something like calibre to remove the restrictions.
Other digital media will have other converters needed for copy protection removal.  Android is the wild wild west !

Great Post Troutz. Thanks. This tutorial should be stickied somewhere.
