I can't sign into my existing or a new google account

I picked up my brand new nexus earlier today and for whatever reason, no matter what I do, I can't sign into my google account with the device so that I can access google play. I'm also unable to create a new account. Both times I get to the screens that say "signing in" and "checking account name" respectively and nothing else happens. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And yes, I'm definitely connected to my wi-fi. Thanks in advance.

Are you able to connect to the internet?  Do you have a wi-fi password that needs to be entered before you can access the internet?  You could be connected to your 'wi-fi' but perhaps your Nexus 7 is not able to get past the encryption if you haven't entered your password for it.  Just a thought.

Since you have not stated your experience level, I would suggest some basic steps to verify Internet connectivity. First open Google Chrome and verify that you have Internet access. If so go to gmail.com and verify your user name and password.

Post as much additional information as you can concerning your issue and we will try to offer more specific help.

Well let me join the crowd, I can't sign into gmail either.
Yes I have a connection, yes I entered the PW
but I still get a "couldn't establish a reliable connection" could be temporary or try another network.
Not a happy camper, got hit with a $75. customs charge on delivery

Out of curiosity, can you open a web browser on your N7 and access your Gmail account?
