Hard Reset Help
« on: September 18, 2012, 10:33:20 AM »
Hi guys,

colleague at work decided to play a prank and put a password on my nexus 7 tablet.

Except he forgot the password.

Now going by google's method to reset without going into the devices settings (through bootloader) doesn't work for me, as although it'll come up with the android on his back and the start button, from there the volume down button the article seems to suggest will bring up the option to reset never does anything.

Anyone able to help? "/

First question, is your tablet rooted?

Factory reset when you cannot access recovery.

This method can be used if the device is no longer functioning at all and you may be succesful without connecting by a USB cable

1. Turn off the device if it is turned on, and connect it via USB cable to your computer
 2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Volume Down, and the Power Button at the same time for about three to four seconds to turn the device on, if done correctly you’ll see an Android lying on its back (this may prompt a driver installation on your computer, so let that driver install before you proceed if so. If you need the driver, download a zipped copy Here)
 3. Use the volume buttons to navigate to the Recovery Mode option, and press the Power Button to confirm your choice
 4. The device will restart, and after a few minutes the device should boot to a screen showing an Android with a red triangle, press and hold the Power Button and Volume Up on this screen for about two seconds and let go to make the menu options appear
 5. Use the volume buttons to navigate to Wipe Data / Factory Reset and press the Power Button to confirm your choice
 6. Use the volume buttons to navigate to Yes and press the Power Button to confirm your choice

Cheers S.Prime, however on step 4, the screen with the Android and the red triangle never appears. I just get the google logo. (Left for around 20 minutes each attempt, three attempts).

I always thought that if you entered a PIN or Password wrong three times you would be locked out until entering your Google ID (Gmail) and Password?

That is true for pins or patterns, however, for some reason passwords are not included in this rule.

Ended up unlocking the bootloader through adb and my PC, and in doing so, reset the tablet.

Stupid buggy bootloader not letting me reset. >.>

Note to self; set password on it myself, that I remember, so no-one else can do it.

Cheers anyways guys. Oh and now I've played around with the bootloader, I'm rather tempted to flash a custom rom on it as the tablet is blank at the moment anyway ;)

Actually that was my next suggestion, but not knowing your skill level, I thought it best to take it one step at a time. Glad you got it though. For future reference we will go straight to one of the tool kits.
