Backing up my Nexus7 to a laptop without a Took Kit?
« on: October 15, 2012, 05:50:08 PM »
Hi, is there a way to back Nexus7 files and downloaded apps. to my laptop without the Nexus Tool Kit?
I have not seen this questions in Search and hope it's not redundant.
If a Tool Kit is required, which one would you suggest?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

You cannot backup your Android device's Apps and data without using the toolkit in the forum's guide to rooting, which works without rooting or by rooting your device and using Titanium Backup or making a nandroid backup.

Thank you S.Prime.
I'm glad to be able to do it without rooting the Nexus.  I'm still fairly new at the Android System and afraid of "Bricking" my device.
As I'm getting a little more confident I'm looking forward to root and enjoy the little extras this procedure brings. Thanks again!

I can understand your fears about possibly "bricking" your device however, this is nearly impossible with the Nexus 7.   Root access does allow us to make many changes, some of which can potentially damage your device. Most of the changes that you learn about here will not damage your device, but unleash its potential! I look forward to accompanying you on your journey through the rabbit hole!

Thank you for your reply, loociddreemer.  It gives me more courage... In the meantime I have purchased the OTR Cable and installed Nexus Media Importer. It works great!
Thanks again!

Why back up both apps and data?  Apps can always be re-downloaded from the app store if needed.
I used to be crazy until I found out that insane pays more.

Where am I?  What am I doing in this handbasket?

some apps are downloaded from a posted link that I can lose track of where it came from (like flash say) and then side-loaded - i would and do back those up.

I also backup those I pay for just as a precaution - not that I don't trust google /whoever (hahahahhahahaha, right!)

With an app like Titanium Pro you can batch recover apps all at one time. I have done it the long way and its a hassle.

Anken. This is the toolkit that a lot of Nexus owners are using. If you need help, let us know.
After you get it setup on your PC and the Nexus is recognized , unlocking , rooting and backing up is pretty painless. With all the knowledge the  members have here you really won't be stuck for long. As far as permanently bricking one, I don't think I have seen that happen yet.

Backing up the apps in Titanium pro allows you to restore them all with one action instead of selecting them all manually in the store.

If your rooted with a custom recovery you can now create an update.zip with all your applications and data which you flash through TWRP or CWM, great for serial ROM flashers...

Why a no no?

Using system app data on custom ROM's is a no no...

Does this flashable zip only contain the user apps?
