No need to unroot to receive updates nexusNovice but you will loose root unless you take precautions like Superuser or SuperSU's OTA update survival options or Voodoo OTA RootKeeper available on Google Play.
Please explain. What do I need to do to prevent losing root with an update?
Thanks.

Where are you at? I read that you've rooted, have you updated yet or do you have the notification?

My nexus 7 is only 4 days old.  So I got my update to 4.2.2 before I rooted. So I am asking to understand how things work before the next update.

Download OTA Root Keeper. Run it. You should be fine for the next update. SuperSU has a similar option but have not tested it

Got it. How does one use it?  Do I let it temporarily unrooted me?
Thanks

There are other ways.

If you have a custom recovery like CWM and flash the update zip you can prevent the lose of root.
Superuser and SuperSU also have OTA survival modes.

Using CWM Touch recovery will preserve Root and your choice of custom recovery.

Run Voodoo OTA RootKeeper.  Click the Protect Root button.  That's all there is to it.

The free versions of SuperSU and SuperUser do not offer Survival Mode.  You have to upgrade to SuperUser Elite or SuperSU Pro to get those options.

You're welcome.

I'm not the lowest of the low, but I am the slowest of the slow (49.6 mpg over 38k miles in  Scion xB)
