Did you download and install the drivers and program that is linked in the toolkit thread?

As bjs229, suggested, read the forum guide to rooting? You will find the answer to determining if your drivers are installed correctly. Just some feedback, the adb drivers are critical to rooting.

You must make sure to remove all drivers that are on the computer for your device left after plugging it in, and use Wugs and follow the driver installation instructions he even provides the program to remove the old ones and the correct drivers, and after following his tut you should have the drivers installed correctly and when you've done it you can even test it to make sure they are installed right. I'm not being funny but if you can't get the drivers installed I would avoid the whole process as you need to know what your doing and if you do brick it you will struggle following the tuts like SDK to get it back. Think about it.

I have not yet rooted my nexus 7. Still reading and picking up my courage to do it. :-) But I recall that when I rooted my android phone it would not root till I uninstalled Avast mobile security app. It's anti theft feature is designed to prevent it. One more cause for difficulty for those who have it installed.

Hope this helps someone.

Question: once rooted, but without flashing a custom rom, can the android update itself or will i need to unroot to get updates?

Thanks

No need to unroot to receive updates nexusNovice but you will loose root unless you take precautions like Superuser or SuperSU's OTA update survival options or Voodoo OTA RootKeeper available on Google Play.
