Odd Video Chat Issue
« on: November 27, 2012, 05:17:32 PM »
Got a small issue with the nexus - I use my Win7 desktop all the time for video chatting through g-mail via chrome, but whenever the Nexus is on and has google talk open, it defaults to sending video chat to the nexus - anyone else with this issue?

Very difficult post to follow my friend. Simplify it please.
What defaults and sends it to the Nexus?

You can bring up your hangouts from the left margin in chrome and manually select the hangout to join. I mostly use my nexus for video chats, but I'll test it out.

I think I am understanding now. As far as the issue. I would close the Google  app on the nexus. Why is it open if you are not using it?

I'm sorry - allow me to clarify here and also modify the post:

You can do video chatting through g-mail's chat function (via an internet browser like chrome) on a standard computer.

You can also do video chatting through the Nexus's google talk function.

Whenever someone tries to video chat you, a notification is sent to start the video chat. This video chat is always sent to the Nexus, even when I have been chatting through g-mail on my desktop and my Nexus doesn't even have it's screen on.

Basically, the video chat is always sent to my tablet instead of my computer - not sure why though.

No Google+, or Google hangout - standard google video chat through g-mail and through "talk" app on the tablet. The video chat will always get sent to the talk app on the tablet.

ps

you can still do standard video chats in g-mail: when you have a chat dialogue box open, you can select more on the upper left. For example, If I attempted to initiate a video chat to someone with my problem, the video chat would always get sent to their nexus instead of their computer, even if he/she were chatting on the computer

A friend of mine has the Galaxy S3 and has this same problem as well.

Just to further clarify - let's say you have the Nexus, with google talk and video chat capability, and a Droid Razr, with google talk and video chat capability, and someone attempts to send you a video chat - to which device does that video chat get sent to, and what determines that?

Wow. Even if you are signed out on the tablet?

I have many Google accounts. I am just thinking if you weren't connected to the account you were using on the PC would that make a difference?
Great question with the numerous devices.. I really don't know. I have a hard enough time getting my cell phone and nexus to communicate with Google voice.

Nono - only if I am signed on on the tablet - I guess that's an important distinction - you could say, well just sign out of the tablet every time you are at home to chat, which is fine and is a temporary solution, but I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue, and why/why not. When I eventually own a few devices, I will need to solve this.

For example, when you have a laptop and a desktop that are both signed onto g-mail, the video chat will go to the "active" device, whichever you were last chatting on. This doesn't seem to be the case for computer + tablet/phone

FYI

I did some testing just now, and it seemed to send to the computer when the tablet screen was off, and send to the tablet when the tablet screen was on - so I think it will check to see the tablet, and if the tablet's screen is off, it will send to the computer;

However, I asked my friend with the Galaxy S3 this, and she said that even when her phone screen is off and she is on the computer, the video chat will 'wake' the phone and send to the phone instead.

edit::
the video chat still went to the tablet even though the tablet screen was off - the very next attempt with no change, and the video chat went to the computer.

I think this is a great thread. It will be very helpful to a lot of people. I like never use my computer or phone anymore so I digress to the Tri crowd.

hope so, but haven't seen anyone necessarily say they have the same issue - hopefully this can be figured out though

I think people just haven't realized they have the issue. Big difference .

There a setting in Google Talk that makes you "Unavailable" when screen is off.

Tap the three dots, top right, select settings and Google account...

The setting is under General and "Away when screen is off" will be ticked, I would guess your friend with the S3 does not have this ticked?
