The UK based 'The Times' newspaper is offering an interesting deal for those that read  or would like to read the digital edition of their publication.  Sign up for an 18 month £4/week (it's £17.33 per month subscription fee) and you can purchase a 32GB Nexus 7 for only £50.  The subscription gives you access to the full 'The Times' content as well as let's you use their mobile apps unlocked.

There's actually three different subscription plans they offer with the £4 'The Digital Pack' being their cheapest which offers the tablet and phone app versions of the paper as well as access to their main site.   The other two are 'The Classic Pack' which costs £6 and gives you physical copies of the paper as well as full access to their main site and the phone app...but not the tablet version, and 'The Ultimate Pack' which costs £8 but gives you everything... physical papers, the tablet version, phone version and the full site.   If you've been thinking of buying a Nexus 7 and would enjoy and make use of 'The Times' subscription, then you're essentially getting the Nexus 7 for 75% off.  Any takers from our UK forum members on this deal?

Not when you add it up.

OK if you want the subscription.

My initial math was wrong.  I was misreading it as £4 per month...not week.  So the deal is 'ok' as CBers said...not great.

If you figure the 32GB Nexus 7 will cost you £199.00 at a store like Currys in the UK and compare it to this deal you get:

£50(N7 discounted cost) + £72.00 (18weeks at £4 per week)=  £122

£199-£122=£77

If I did my math right you you save £77 with this deal over buying a Nexus 7 straight from retail.

They must be gambling that a certain number of people will remain as subscribers past the initial 18 month subscription to make up for the loss they're taking on each tablet.

Besides it's not just that, some people may not have £200 to spend outright on a tablet but split that into weeks and it's allot easier....

Although you could do the same with a mail order catalogue...

Okay so maybe it's not such a good deal after all...

£17.33 for 18 months equals £311.94 plus £50 for the N7 equals £361.94....gulp....
