Download Movies and TV
« on: December 28, 2012, 03:18:07 PM »
Hello All,

I am new to the N7.  I would like to use it at work to listen to music and watch video files (TV & movies).  Unfortunately we don't have WiFi at work.  Is there a way to download the actual files to the N7 and watch them later?  We have a lot of music on iTunes.  Can this be used?  Please advise.

Regards,

John

Welcome to the forums.
Yes.  You can store movies and music on the Nexus for use without Wi-Fi.
One way is to connect thru your computer and copy the files to the proper folders on the Nexus. I use MP3 format and flac for music. Not sure about iTunes.... for video. avi and Mpeg4 work fine for me. You might want to look into a third party video app like Mx  or BS player to play different formats and something like Power Amp for music.

Music and podcasts downloaded from iTunes are compatible with Android phones in most cases. Music purchased from iTunes is in the AAC format, which Android plays.

The one exception to this are songs bought from iTunes prior to the April 2009 introduction of iTunes Plus and the removal of DRM from iTunes songs. These files, called Protected AAC, won't work on Android because it doesn't support iTunes' DRM. However, you can upgrade these songs to Android-compatible Purchased AAC files for US$0.30/song.

Thanks for the info.  I will definitely try porting some iTunes to my thumb drive to see if they work.  Where do you get the video files?  It seems like all of the services available now are streaming only...

John

If your N7 is not rooted, you will need to use Nexus Media Importer and an OTG cable to use READ-ONLY storage on USB Thumbdrives.

If your N7 is rooted, you will need to use stickmount and an OTG cable to use READ-WRITE storage on USB Thumbdrives.

I had a similar question as the original poster. To review what you said, I can put a dvd movie which is downloaded onto my Mac onto a thumb drive, and then play it directly from the thumb drive? Where do I get Nexus Media Importer (it goes on the Nexus, right?) and where to I get the OTG cable?

I'll be travelling in a couple of weeks and would love to have a couple of movies to watch at the airport and on the flight.

Thanks.

Is it bad netiquette to respond to my own post  :) I found the info... OTG cable can be found on Amazon, and the Nexus Media Importer is at the Google Play Store. I'll get both and see if they work.
Thanks!

Yes. You can put a movie on a thumb drive and play it exactly the way you are thinking..
Be careful because some otg cables don't work for the Nexus 7. Make sure you buy one that is stated to work with this unit. I used eBay.

Thanks... that's great. I did order one that specifically said it was for Nexus 7.

You should be cool. If you decide to root, Stickmount is a great app. You can write to the stick as well. I don't think that is an option with Media importer..

correct, You will need to use Nexus Media Importer to PLAY the media on the thumbdrive, or you can play it directly with any compatible app if you transfer it using NMI to your internal storage.   When you 'play' a file in NMI, you tell it which app to stream the file TO, so you will need MXplayer, BSplayer, Dice player or equal to play the file routed from NMI.  These 3 apps generally will play any common vid format.

Yes, NMI is read only for connected flash memory or hard drives and only certain media file types are compatible with it.  Rooting is clearly a superior option for those willing to walk on the wild side.
