The Times Tablet app
« on: January 07, 2013, 03:36:13 AM »
Hi,

I recently signed up to The Times UK offer of a Nexus 7 (Wifi only) plus subscription.  A friend has an iPad with Time subscription and the latest version is automatically downloaded daily.  I contacted The Times before making my order to ensure this happened with the Android version (as I often use the train in the morning and don't want to have to get the Nexus out, open the app before I leave home - as I'd probably forget) and was told this would be the case with the Android version.

I have the Nexus now, but don't see an option on the app to do this - or to set up an account to automatically download the latest version.  I've contacted The Times tech support but no answer as yet.

Anyone else have the Times app for the Nexus 7 and done this?

This might be too simple of a question so excuse me.. Have you gone into the settings of the app and look for a checkbox that refers to update automatically? There should be three little dots to get you into settings.

Thanks for the reply,

That's the thing, there isn't a menu option on the app - I too was expecting the '...' but nothing.  Also nothing under 'Apps' that appears to help.

I think the problem is the app...

There are two versions, one for smartphones and the other for tablets. The smartphones version has the menu button in the Nav bar, shown here on my Nexus 4...

Whereas the tablet version does not...

Personally I see no reason why there are two separate versions, it's just poor application development when a single app can be coded to do both smartphones and tablets but the fact they are promoting this offer with the Nexus 7 when the app isn't optimised for a tablet without physical buttons is appalling.

Here are the settings on my Nexus 4...

Obviously the Nexus 4 has a Nav bar like the Nexus 7 and the menu option is available. I would recommend contacting The Times or probably better still contract The Times application developer here...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, I personally don't read The Times but installed the application to help.

Many thanks JayJ,

I've just got off the phone to Jigsaw (who handle tech queries for The Times) and they say that currently there isn't an option to enable auto download of the latest edition (unlike the iPad version that uses - I think - Newstand).

Not exactly happy with The Times as I was told this would be the case.... ho hum.

But thanks again for the input.

No problem, happy to help. Question is, are you happy enough with your Nexus 7 to keep it?

That's the thing - I've only had it five days and I really like it - The Times did talk about refunding, but I'm too attached!

To be honest, I was thinking about getting the 10" version, but only got the 7" because of the Times deal.  As it turned out, I think it's a really good size.  A friend has an iPad and I find that a bit too big - if you're on the sofa, I was having to keep moving around to get a comfortable position (balancing on my knee etc) - no problems with this which is poss why Apple are bringing out the mini.

Also, I use the train a fair bit and this is a really good size.

That's great, a win, win all round then!

I wouldn't want a 10" tab either, the 7" form factor of the Nexus 7 is perfect for me. Its big enough to read comics, play games and watch movies on so suits me down to the ground.
