Chinese spam in notification bar
« on: March 14, 2013, 05:08:03 AM »
Hi Guys,
i keep getting a notification in chinese in my top bar. Its got a picture of an anime and if I click it tries to download an APK. It gets places in appcache, which contains a few pics and an xml script I think. I've run all the malware apps and airpush detectors, nothing shows up, it goes away for a few days when I clear appcache, then comes back again. I've uninstalled recently install apps, but its still coming back. Anyone else had this?
Steve

Do you have non-market apps enabled? If so temporarily disable it and it may give you some direction in eliminating the issue.

I'd do the nuclear option.  Factory data reset.

I'm not the lowest of the low, but I am the slowest of the slow (49.6 mpg over 38k miles in  Scion xB)

Bird has seen >650 North American bird species
Rooted Nexus 7
49.5 mpg avg for 53k miles in non-hybrid Scion xB
Retired 9 yrs, and loving it

I'd try finding out what was causing it rather than going nuclear.

Its obviously a rogue app somewhere. Either find it and get rid of all remnants or reset.

In settings, apps I would tap each app one at a time and clear the show notifications box. Or disable the apps if that doesn't work. When you find it let us know. You could also go to the play store, hit the down arrow to see all your installed apps. Go to each app's page and read the reviews to find complaints about this behavior. Add your own. Other markets as well, but different methods to find installed apps list.

As I understand it, most of the ads come from Admob, inmobi, and jumptap.  If we knew the urls which send out the ads for these ad networks it might be possible to simply block them in the hosts file.

Does anyone know the urls to block?

I don't get any ads to my notifications. When you say most come from these places. How? You mean by allowing an app to push them?

I don't get ads in my notification area either, so maybe I misunderstood; but if you run the "ad network detector" app you suggested higher up (or similar apps) these 3 come up as the most common providers of ads for mobile apps. So it would seem to make sense to block them anyway.
I personally use a firewall which blocks Internet access to all but a very few selected apps, so I don't get ads. But other than a firewall the host file could be another way to block the ads.

What is the apk it is trying to install. Maybe you can connect the development team to one of your apps.

You'll have to ask techguy. He's the one with the problem. I was just trying to help.

Dunno, it was just randomname.apk I wasnt gonna let it install to find out!
If it pops up again, I'll post the contents of appcache for brighter minds to disseminate.
