Google maps not working on GPS alone?
« on: December 11, 2013, 05:32:56 AM »
When I am not connected to a Wifi, and open my google maps, it won't show my location and gives me a message saying there is no network connection.

I go to my GPS test, and it sees many satellites at good strength and seems to be working.

Why can't I get the google maps to work off the gps satellites alone? Is this right or am I doing something wrong?

Also, I can't find any way to turn the GPS function on or off or see a status on it at all other than using the GPS Test app I downloaded from google play. Is this the way it is supposed to be or am I somehow looking in the wrong place?

I would appreciate any insight any of you may have! :-)

Go to SettingsĀ» locationĀ» tap mode and you see the what your tablet is using to determine location. Note if Mode displays "High" you are using GPS.

Google maps needs an internet connection because it doesn't store the entire map database on your device as it would take up to much space and leave you very little room for your stuff. So maps has to stream map data from Google's servers. It is possible to download the data you need for offline use and be able to use it for navigation, but this is only good for short trips.

There is a power widget that allows you to turn on our of various things like GPS, WiFi, and others just use that to turn your GPS on and off.

That actually makes sense, thanks! Now I guess I just have to find that power widget.

A related question, my gps test seems to find satellites indoors, how is this possible? Even in windowless rooms. I wouldn't think the signal would be strong enough from a satellite to be detectable through walls.

Like I said earlier you can cache map data, but it is a pain especially if you want to cover a fairly large area. You have to be zoomed in to where the scale is somewhere in the neighborhood of 1-5 miles or so. That only caches the data for what is displayed only. It would be nice if they could offer a means to download the map data for a specific city or area. Maybe if enough people make that request it would happen...

Here's a screenshot showing what the power control widget looks like:
