replaced screen
« on: April 13, 2014, 08:52:41 AM »
Hi All

I recently tucked my nexus 7 under my arm, instantly forgot it was there, reached for something, and let it smash to the ground! Cracking the screen. I ordered a new screen with the LCD thingy attached, fitted it.......and it won't do anything!
It's a brand new screen, not a s/h one. When disassembling it, I did unwittingly pull on the ribbon cable a bit, as I didn't realise it was hooked onto the slotted hole it fits thru. I wondered if there was any incompatibility issues with a later screen and an early 1st gen N7?

Any help v mucho appreciated :-)

Cheers

A first question would be, if you had response from the tablet with the cracked screen? If it would not turn on with the cracked screen, you may have had more damage than just the screen.

Doh!! Really should have mentioned that! Yes it worked fine after dropping it. Except that due to the screen damage, you couldn't reliably press anything on the screen. Ta.  :'(

Yes, providing as much information as possible, even the most obvious ones, will help you get the best advice in resolving your issues. I have been bitten a few times, by not establishing the obvious. As for your issue, can you reconnect the cracked screen and establish that your tablet will turn on? That should help you determine if the issue is from the new screen, damage to the ribbon cable, you mentioned, or something else.

Well I initially ordered a screen without the LCD part attached (not sure what use they are? As I couldn't find any LCD displays for sale separately on eBay), so hopelessly attempted to separate the screen lens from the LCD part. Destroying both parts. Ta

You are in a difficult position, without a functional point to start from. Wish I could be more helpful.

I started to write a long diatribe against putting a deb screen on a flo device until I noticed they were different sizes.

If you plug it into the computer, does it detect and load a driver? Did the battery discharge to the point of not booting?

You might try another ribbon cable?

There is a glitch where it can discharge to the point of not booting and not charging. If a driver doesn't load that could be it. Some solutions are to try holding power while plugging in or charging the battery directly to both pairs of red and black for a few minutes to get out of limbo state.

Hi again

Thanks for the input guys. I've got a new ribbon cable arriving in the post tomorrow. And will try the other suggestions if needed. I'll put an update on whether sorted or ongoing in next day or two. Ta again.  8)
