WugFresh can be used to upgrade your Nexus 7 without reinstalling your apps or losing your data. I will post a guide and screenshots later today or tomorrow.  I recently upgraded my Nexus 7 2013 and Nexus 10.

When you say factory settings, do you mean the Android default settings or do you want to revert back to an earlier version of Android?

Since you have a first generation Nexus 7 you might want to revert to KitKat instead of running Lollipop, especially if you're using older apps. The way apps are stored and executed has changed in Lollipop which breaks older apps and they won't run properly if at all. One thing you can try is to uninstall and reinstall an app to see if it helps the app to run properly. If you find that you have too many apps that won't work correctly then you might want to consider reverting to a previous version of Android.

The easiest way to revert to an earlier version of Android is to use a toolkit like SkipSoft's Unified Android Toolkit. This toolkit also allows you to root your device as well as make backups of your apps and data.

I updated my Nexus 7, first gen. and now it is slowed to a snails pace. I will try a factory reset, but just worried it won't help.

If you have a nexus 1st wifi, then I strongly recommend you to upgrade to 5.1!!! No need to revert to the legacy version!
