Transferring photos & a query
« on: August 02, 2012, 12:36:22 PM »
Hi,
Been 'playing' with N7 for a few days & most of the queries I had, have been sorted, however, two still strike me as 'obvious'

1. References have been made to the 'Google Now' &/or maps.  But am I missing the point, the N7 does not have access to 3g.  So without tethering to 3g contract, these are unavailable!!!  I know N7 has wifi, but without free hotspots or 'tethering', still the same result!

2. Its portable, so take it on holiday (foreign).  How do you get the photos from your camera (a real one) onto the N7? - do you need to 'root' the N7???

Thoughts would be appreciated, especially Q2.

TIA

Mark

Offline navigation/maps requires an app that downloads map data to the N7, and its gps turned on.  Google Maps and Navi let you download local area maps.  Navfree lets you download state maps.

You have to be rooted to read your camera's memory card into your N7, AFAIK.

Hi,
Thx for quick reply.  Not too worried about Q1, but unable to view photos while on holiday is annoying (I know you could bring a laptop, but that sort of defeats the purpose!).
I don't really want to 'root' a new device (don't know how anyway), as copying pics should be easier that having to do this....pity  :(
Looks like its leave N7 & home and bring netbook  :(  (no I don't want to bring both! - pointless for what I want to do).
Perhaps Google or 'partner will bring out something that will allow you to do this :-\

Have you thought of using an "Eye-Fi" card? Like the ones Here.

Hi,
Excellent idea  :)  Went to the UK site to find out more.  Excerpt on what is needed...

1 "...A broadband Internet connection
2 A Wi-Fi router compatible with 802.11b/g/n on the 2.4GHz band. Note: 5 GHz band is not supported.
3 A computer with Windows XP (SP3)/Vista/7 or Mac OSX (Intel) 10.5, or 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
4 100MB of free space
5 A compatible iOS or Android device (required to use Direct Mode only)"

Before I email company, has anyone used these cards (connected to N7 even better)?  My queries would be around 1 & 2 - needed, and how does 5 on N7 connect?
(update...just checked site for compatible cameras, mine is not on it - canon ixus 120  :( )

TIA

It looks like you have to have a Windows computer to read the eye-fi card.  Unless there's an eye-fi Android app, it's a no-go.

Another possibility, which I use, is DropBox.  I loads 'em onto my comp, click and drag 'em into DB and presto... they are shared on all of my devices.

I also have googledrive/dropbox, but you could not do this when you are on holiday, as if they were on computer - just attach N7  :).

If this was the case, then I just bring the computer!!!!

The simple answer would be to allow the N7 to read external cards for this very purpose >:(

(it seems that there is no easy way without 'hacking' the N7  >:( ) - unless someone knows different  :) - a '1 - click root' for noobs!!!

I'm in the UK and use a 3 Mi-Fi,  here.

store.three.co.uk/Mobile_Broadband/MiFi

Not what the costs are for data roaming but you could ask and then you could use Dropbox or whatever.

TBH rooting the N7 was very easy,  should be easy for a noob too.

It looks like there is an eye-fi host app for android that will do the job.

Just a note on rooting, once you install the adb drivers, rooting is basically two clicks. Sorry about the extra click ;-)
