Desktop Quality Gaming On Your Nexus 7 Tablet With 'OnLive'
« on: August 10, 2012, 12:46:43 PM »

Continuing with our Friday gaming theme we thought we'd tell the unfamiliar about an innovative way to game on your Nexus 7 tablet.  Now the Nexus 7 Tablet is a great gaming device in itself with its Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and 12 core GeForce GPU but as good as the Nexus 7 is as a 'best in breed' mobile device, mobile Android games still don't have the complexity or graphic awesomeness of a high-end PC based title.  'OnLive Gaming' is a service that enables you to play full-fledged high-end PC games on your Nexus 7 through an internet connection.  Now once again we've got 'MarcTheGeek' showing us in the video below how 'OnLive Gaming' works and I think you'll agree the results are extremely impressive.

Now the quality of your 'Onlive Gaming' experience definitely depends on the quality and speed of your internet connection.   If you have a glitch-free high speed wireless router then you'll have an amazing experience without lag and with super responsive controlling of the action.  If however your internet connection is slow or intermittent...it'll reflect in the quality of the graphics as well as smoothness of the action on your tablet.   Ok, so say you have a great wi-fi connection...what are some of the advantages of 'OnLive Gaming'? Here's a rundown:

On Demand Gaming from Anywhere
With 'OnLive Gaming' you can play your favorite PC titles anywhere.  Just buy them once through the OnLive service and wherever you have an internet connection you can access the full game.   The service hosts most of the most popular and bleeding edge titles like Batman Arkham City, Assassin's Creed, Darksiders and many, many more.

Unique Game Platform Experiences
OnLive also gives you some really cool gaming experiences you won't find anywhere else.  My favorite has to be the spectating arena where you can watch any of hundreds of other gamers play some of the coolest games around.   This is a really great way to 'preview' games you're thinking of buying as well as to watch your friends as they go for that high score or next level.   You also can chat with other gamers and if you choose to can join in on the action with the press of a button and get in on the game.  There's also social networking sharing built-in to the service so you can show your latest gaming accomplishments on Facebook and other services.

Play with Touch or OnLive Wireless Controller
Another cool option with 'OnLive Gaming' is the OnLive Wireless Controller.  Now we just showed you how you can use a PS3 controller with many of the games on the service with your Nexus 7.   The 'OnLive Wireless Controller' is specially designed to work with a large portion of the games that OnLive offers.   Games that are compatible with the device are specially marked on your OnLive game selection menu so you'll know beforehand if you can use the controller.  Now please note that the company has stated that Nexus 7 support for the 'OnLive Wireless Controller' is 'coming soon' so as of today you'll be hit or miss with what games it might work with similar to the PS3 controller.  But when support is official the company will map specific controls for most games right to the controller which will make it even better than the PS3 for 'OnLive Games'.

Of course 'OnLive Gaming' is a pay service and you can get pricing for specific games on their site.   They also have some 'demo' games you can try out for free to see if you like the service and also to check out if your Wi-Fi connection is fast enough to make it smooth.  You'll have to download the Android App at the link below to access the service from your Nexus 7 tablet.

Now we know that having to have a Wi-Fi connection to play your favorite games isn't right for everyone and you'll probably always have your favorite mobile game downloaded on your tablet.  But for those that are looking to really experience 'PC-Quality' gaming and want to have access to their games while away from home this is a cool service to have access to.   It's also important to remember that you can play your 'OnLive' games not only on your Nexus 7 but also through your PC, TV and Android or iOS phone as well.  Buy once..play anywhere.   If you're a serious gamer it's worth giving a try.   So anyone out there in the forum use 'OnLive Gaming' on their Nexus 7 Tablet yet?

“In fact, if you’re still at all skeptical about OnLive, I highly encourage you to give it a spin. You’ll be inside of a game in less than five minutes, and you can see for yourself just how well it works.” – touchArcade
