How to remove bloatware after root
« on: August 13, 2012, 06:59:33 PM »
I went ahead and rooted my device.

I bought this tablet for my kids to play games on and I didn't want them watching pornography on youtube or anything. I have tried disabling apps but the kids keep re-enabling them.

Anyway. I decided to root the Nexus 7. I used this Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit from XDA. I rooted it with permanent CWM (Whatever that means). I have installed the SuperSU and BusyBox Free. It deleted all the other apps when I unlocked and rooted it. Just the bloatware remains. Like YouTube, Chrome, and GooglePlus, etc.

What do I need to do to remove those apps? do I have to download this Root Explorer app?

Hi jcrestonm,

I used Titanium Backup, a very cool app.  It'll do what you want and much more.  Good luck,

Just freeze them with titanium. Get to your list of applications within the application, long press and hit freeze. Just make sure you do not freeze any system apps.

Firstly I totally understand your reasons for wanting rid of these apps for the usage your N7 is getting but why buy an N7 for games for children when there are so many other options? But it's your money and your choice...
Also the apps you are referring to cannot be classed as bloatware, they may not be of use to you but they are not bBloatware. Bloatware is software/apps that usually OEM's add to the android OS during the branding/skinning of the Android UI.

Freezing apps via Titanium is probably not going to help, freezing apps is the same as disabling them so they still appear in Apps and can be re-enabled. Deleting apps can cause system problems and update problems so I suggest the following...

Install Root Explorer, navigate to>

/system/apps

Now any app you don't want on your N7 you change the file extension, for example>

Chrome.apk becomes Chrome.bak

To do this just long press on the apk file and select rename, delete apk from the end and add bak. This can later be editted back to apk and the app still exists in your system, so if for any reason you decide you want these apps back or the removal of them causes any system problems you can restore them.

Once you have edited the file extension of the apps you don't want simply uninstall Root Explorer.

Hope that helps.

I know that's what i don't understand.  This stuff isn't bloatware. That's why I bought a nexus, there is no bloatware these apps he's talking about are your basic apps that most people use on a daily basis. If you want a gaming device for you kids than buy a Nintendo DS. If your really worried about your kids looking up inappropriate materiel buy a Xoom family edition and you get a lot more control over what is available on the tablet.

After thinking about it some I suppose it works out a little cheaper than a dedicated gaming console, a Nintendo DS New costs about $150 (don't quote me on this, I'm in the UK) , but it's the cost of games in comparison to the cost of Android games.
An Android Games cost anything from 99c to $5 whereas a DS game....

I'm still not sure because second hand/used games and console can be picked up at such reasonable prices these days but hey it's his/her money and who are e to tell him/her what they do with their N7.
