Buy the 8GB or 16GB?
« on: September 10, 2012, 03:14:06 PM »
I really want to buy the Nexus 7 is it really necessary to buy the 16GB or can I get away being fine with the 8GB? My main uses for this device will be gaming, not much else beside gaming and surfing the web. Please let me know thanks!

Really for gaming especially if you intend on playing large games like NOVA 3, Mass Effect etc then a 16GB would be an advantage.
There are work-arounds but that would involve rooting your device and using apps like Stickmount and Directory Bind.

If you're just going to be using it primarily for games and web surfing you can get away with the 8GB (although like JayJ said 16GB could be handy).   Most games don't take up all that much room though unless you're playing one that downloads tons of excess graphics like open world adventure games.  If you were planning on loading a lot of movies on your Nexus 7 then i'd suggest the 16GB.  Frankly, since we now have the nexus media importer app that let's you carry a usb thumb drive with your media and an easy way to get it on your Nexus 7 a 16GB is less necessary imo.  If you can afford the extra $50 the 16GB is nice to have though so you don't have to worry about space as much.

I think 8GB is a bit **edited by admin**. Available to the user is more like 6GB. Since there is no SD slot, I would just bite the bullet and part with the extra $50. Whether you envisage using it for music or videos or not, apps take up space. I would rather just have the extra space than forced to make decisions on deleting content and apps often.  8)

Or, for <$10, you can get a USB - OTG cable and an 8GB flash drive, root your N7, and move your game data to your flash drive.

If you are not inclined to root the Nexus 7 and risk your warranty, the 16Gb is a better bet.  As was mentioned, on the 8Gb N7, you the user have less than 6Gb when it is brand new.

What Bird was getting at is that using Stickmount and Directory Bind you can place large data file from apps on a Thumb drive so as not to take up lots of space, this is an extremely handy work around if you pay games like Horn, NOVA 3, GTA 3, Deadspace etc.
