**Update:  Google Has Now Updated Their 'Device Availability Page' To Show The Nexus 7 Is Now Available To Order In France, Germany And Spain for €199/8GB and €249/16GB which translates to $248US and $311US, a slight premium over US prices.**

Now that the Google Play Store seems to have caught up with its lack of supply it appears Google is about to start rolling out the Nexus 7 to a number of European Union countries starting with France and Germany.  The technology blog 'TechCrunch' is reporting today that multiple retailers have leaked that French retailers Fnac, Darty and Boulanger will all be selling the tablet beginning September 3rd.  Pricing seems pretty consistent among the three with the 16GB model selling for €249.90 ($312, including sales tax).

Apparently there's been a little drama in the country in regards to who gets to sell the much anticipated 7 inch slate with 'Material.net', an ecommerce site, apparently being turned down by Google to carry the tablet at launch because they don't fill the company's requirement of having physical stores.  'Material.net' even published a rant against Google on their site but in the end they are promising customres that they will in fact have the Nexus 7 to sell.   It seems the site is committed to simply buying tablets from other suppliers and will sell them at cost to satisfy their loyal customers.

The French aren't the only one's that will be celebrating Nexus 7 Day on the 3rd of Septembre however.  Late word from German retailer 'Saturn' is that the tablet will also start selling in Germany on the same day for €249.  Now the Nexus 7 is expected to be a hot seller when it comes to the EU since much hype has been generated and hence demand with the successful launch...and shortage here in the U.S.  Other EU countries should follow France and Germany in selling the tablet shortly after if in fact others aren't announced for the Sept 3rd launch.

For those eager to get their hands on one, several of the retailers listed above have expressed that they will be taking pre-orders shortly so that probably will be your best bet in getting one of the first lot.   Those who don't preorder will have to take their chances come the first week of September.

Looking for a slick, professional yet easy to use calendar app for your Nexus 7?  Well look no further than the aptly named 'Business Calendar' by Appgenix Software.  While there a number of good competing calendars out there such as 'Calengoo' and 'Jorte' and 'aCalendar', 'Business Calendar' consistently ranks among the most popular and has been recently updated for 'Jelly Bean' so it works great with your N7.  With the ability to synchronize all your existing calendars into one easy to use interface and with terrific widget support, 'Business Calendar' has quickly become my favorite calendar to use on both my Nexus 7 and Android phone.  Here's a brief video that runs through just some of 'Business Calendar's features...

While the host mentions the Kindle Fire and Xoom, Business Calendar has recently been updated for Jelly Bean devices like the Nexus 7

Quote
Features:
* smooth scroll- and zoomable multi-day view (1-14 days)
* graphical and textual presentation
* month, agenda, day and event view
* quickly fade in/out calendars using the favorite bar
* search function
* configurable widgets in different sizes for month, week, agenda and day view (3 design themes for each widget type)
* easy switching between timeline bars and event titles in month view
* intuitive new handling option: just move your finger over some days of interest in month view to open them in the multi-day view
* quick day overview when adding a new event
* many options for recurrent events (e.g. to add a recurrent event that takes place every other week on Tuesday and Thursday)
* context-sensitive help system to optimize your work with Business Calendar

This is the free version of Business Calendar, it is containing (unintrusive) ads in some views but is fully functional! Even so, the ad-free paid version offers some additional features:

* drag&drop mode in the multi-day view to move and copy events
* option to link a contact to an event
* configurable font sizes for the app and the widgets
* option to select individual calendars for each widget
* own Business Calendar reminders
* 11 different widget design themes
* option to create templates for events
* import/export function for calendar files in the popular iCalendar format (.ics, .ical)

As is mentioned in the video one of the strong points of 'Business Calendar' is its terrific widget support which allows you to see your most important information at a glance without having to open up the full application.  I also love all the little slick features that this calendar app has that make it stand out above the rest.  Things like the animated 'pop up' of the days 'scheduled events' when you touch a day in month view and the little colored menu of your different calendars that runs along the bottom of the screen that let's you focus on just one 'calendar' at a time with a simple tap.    Another great thing is that 'Business Calendar' is scrollable and zoomable so that you can see just how much of a day, month or week on the screen that you want.  It provides almost an unlimited amount of customization.

Now there is a free version of 'Business Calendar' that is fully featured that I recommend you try out to see if you like it.   If you decide to go for the pro version it costs $4.99 and for the price you'll get a whole bunch of new color combination themes for the widgets plus a bunch of other customization features such as the ability to change font size, a drag and drop mode in multi-day view, the ability to select individual calendars for each widget and more.  I've got links for both versions below or  you can find them in the Google Play Store.  So, which calendar do you use and what do you think of 'Business Calendar'?  Let us know in the comments!

There's lots more customized widgets like these in the paid version

Video quality is very dependent on both your and the other party's internet connection speed.    Make sure both parties are on a fast connection or it usually won't be very clear.

After the long press you 'drag' it to the delete option on the top of the screen.

When Google contracted with Asus to build the Nexus 7 Tablet they made a strategic decision to limit the OTG or On-The-Go capabilities of the microUSB slot so that it would not allow the booting of a USB drive or SD card for storage.   Now there's been lots of debate as to the reasoning, rationale and intent of these omissions but suffice to say it was a combo of cost savings and attempts to encourage users to use the Google Play store and cloud storage to purchase content.

While that makes sense strategically for the company there was also an unintended result in that it made it really difficult for a Nexus 7 owner to view or load content on their device that they already owned as well as only provided limited storage on the Nexus 7 for when the user is traveling and can't access extra content from the cloud because they don't have Wi-Fi access.

Well I'm happy to announce that over the last couple of days an enterprising developer that goes by the name 'HomeySoft' has introduced an app that largely solves the storage problem for Nexus 7 users on the go.  With the 'Nexus Media Importer' you can stream music, movies and photos and import other files from a USB drive or SD card reader and the only piece of additional hardware you need is an OTG Cable.   Most importantly there's no rooting required!  Here's a video to show how you set it up.

Now just to be clear this enables you to take a USB drive or SD Card reader and card with you and stream your media to your Nexus 7 and even copy it over.   What it WON'T allow you to do however is move data the other way.  In other words you can't EXPORT or save anything to the USB drive or SD card you have connected.  But still...this is a real boon to us Nexus 7 owners that feel the storage crunch when we don't have access to Wi-Fi.   You can load all your extra movies, music and files to a USB drive and just slip it into your bag with your Nexus 7 wherever you go.   You can even connect directly to many digital cameras and view and import your photos directly to your Nexus 7.

The 'Nexus Media Importer' is still a work in progress in some respects in that there's some extra features that a lot of users are asking for such as full screen photo viewing (right now it's in a dedicated preview window), but the developer has done some really great work here and frankly this is a 'must have' app for any Nexus 7 owner.  It immediately solves one of the biggest limitations of the tablet.   You can grab the 'Nexus Media Importer' in the Google Play store at the link below for just $1.99.   If you'd rather test out your Nexus 7 to get an idea of how it works first you can try out the sister app....the 'Nexus Photo Viewer' which will let you view photos but doesn't have the same import and streaming ability of the full app.  So guys...what do you think?  Is this a 'must have' app for your Nexus 7?

You can pick up a microUSB to USB OTG Converter Cable for your Nexus 7 from Amazon with a lifetime warranty Here.  There are cheaper (usually flimsier) alternatives on Amazon but this one worked well for me and I like the warranty.

Thanks to forum member bob7794 for bringing this app to our attention!

It's back up.  I'm actually surprised that Google allowed this app in the Google Play Store.  Apparently they made the developer remove exFAT capability which is why it was unavailable for a while.   But it apparently let's you read pictures, video and docs off any usb formatted to FAT16 or FAT32.   I'll try it tonight.   Looks like it could really help out the storage issues for Nexus 7 owners.   Only limitation is that it doesn't let you export...just import so it's read only.   Still...pretty cool.

Welcome Tony!  Yes, the Nexus 7 makes a great traveling companion.  Just the right size and perfect for movies, games and reading as well as the odd piece of productivity.   Make yourself at home here at the forum.  There's lots to learn and a lot of nice folks willing to share their knowledge.

One of the features missing from most mobile operating systems including Android is the ability to 'float' an app above others.  This capability is especially useful in an application that is often used alongside other apps such as a chat client where you might want to have a conversation while simultaneously browsing the web or doing some other task on your tablet.   Well we're happy to say that 'LilyPad HD' is the latest in a small but growing number of Android apps that allows just such a floating/multitasking capability and it looks and works terrific to boot.  Here's a brief overview of the 'LilyPad HD' app from its developer, Tablified Apps.

Quote
Features:
-Adjustable/resizable chat windows
-Quick Hide Mode: double tap action bar to enable quick hide mode
-Minimize chat windows completely
-Tabbed chatting for multiple conversations

Client Supported:
-Google Talk
-Facebook Messenger
-MSN/Live Messenger

Upcoming clients support
-Skype
-Yahoo
-AIM

Now as you can surmise, 'LilyPad HD' is an absolutely indispensable app if you're a frequent chat user that will save you tons of 'flipping' between apps while on your Nexus 7.  While it currently supports 'Google Talk', 'Facebook Messenger' and 'MSN/Live Messenger', the developer promises support for 'Skype', 'Yahoo' and 'AIM' soon.  You can even have multiple chats going on simultaneously...in different chat services... and the tabbed window let's you easily flip between conversations.  Of course the chat window is movable and resizable and you can have a 'quick hide' feature activated by quickly double tapping the action bar.   'LilyPad HD' is free for the first 3 days, after which you'll have to pay a small fee, although you can chat using 'Google Talk' after the 3 day trial.  If you've been looking for a better way to chat on your Nexus 7 give 'LilyPad HD' a try at the link below and let us know what you think in the comments.

Did you try contacting the developer first?  Many developers are updating their apps and accessories for the Nexus 7 and Jelly Bean devices.   More and more are coming out with new versions each week.

yeah, if you've turned the device on and off and tried closing the game and can't get it to start up again you might have no choice but to bite the bullet and uninstall/reinstall.

New Member Introductions / Re: Nexus7: in part somewhat disappointing!
« on: August 21, 2012, 09:20:43 PM »
Hi Elliot-  By 'streaming' I'm assuming you mean playing flash video files.   The Nexus 7 has the latest Android operating system, known by the code name 'Jelly Bean'.  Adobe, the maker of Flash is not supporting ANY mobile device on either Android or Apple's iOS from here on out so any 'new' tablet you buy that is running the latest version of the Android operating system...Jelly Bean...will not support Flash out of the box.   The reason that Adobe has decided to stop support for any future mobile device is because the entire web is moving towards the HTML5 protocol which in fact includes its own video streaming ability and which the Nexus 7 supports.

However...there is a workaround to run Flash on the Nexus 7...so no reason to be disappointed!   If you'd used the 'search' function on the forum (which I recommend you do for any questions before you post) you'd see we actually have several threads on this forum that show you how to enable 'Flash' on the Nexus 7 by installing the Flash APK onto the device manually and using an alternative browser instead of the built-in 'Chrome' browser.

Now the 'Chrome' browser on the Nexus 7 is widely regarded as the absolute BEST mobile browser that exists and it fully supports the most modern HTML5 specs.   Websites like 'Youtube' work with it as do many other sites however as I explained above not 'Flash' because Adobe won't support it.   This has nothing to do with Google really.

Anyway, here's a link to find out more information on running 'Flash' on your Nexus 7:  http://nexus7forum.com/index.php?topic=334.msg2458#msg2458

Also, our talented Global Moderator JayJ has written an easy step by step guide here:  http://nexus7forum.com/index.php?topic=458.msg2600#msg2600

Now, if it turns out you're NOT talking about running Flash on your tablet then I'd ask you to be a little more specific about what you mean by 'streaming' because the Nexus 7 does in fact stream tons of video and tv.  I use it all the time for that.  You just have to know how to do it depending on the site.

Hope this helps.

Last week we saw some leaks in $25 and $10 denominations of some soon to be released Gift Cards for the Google Play store.   Well today Google made it official and is offering the cards in $10, $25 and $50 denominations that will be available within weeks at your local Target, Gamestop and RadioShack stores and rumor has it that Walmart will be carrying the Gift Cards starting next month as well.

Explore millions of songs from top artists, thousands of your favorite movies and TV shows, the world's largest selection of eBooks, and much more. Play your purchases instantly on the web or on the go -- no need for wires or syncing.

Shop for all the Android apps and games you love with your Google Play gift card. You can even use it to purchase extra levels, add-on packs, and virtual currency.

Now some interesting notes about these 'Google Play Gift Cards'.  First, they are for U.S. residents only...at least for now.  Our friends in the UK and elsewhere will have to pay for their apps the old fashioned way.  With credit card. :)   Another limitation is that although the cards can be used for any game, app, music movie or any other content including 'in-app purchases' as you see in many games... it excludes app subscriptions, magazine subscriptions, or hardware and accessory purchases.    Those still need to be bought with your credit card on file with your Google Play account.

Regardless of our inability to buy an actual Nexus 7 with a gift card these 'Google Play Gift Cards' should become popular items this coming holiday season replacing or at least keeping company the similar iTunes cards that they will surely do battle with in our imaginary Apple vs. Android battles that take place when the lights are off and the customers have left.    We're sure many more retailers will follow in carrying the 'Google Play Gift Cards' and it's just a matter of time until they're hanging at the Gift Card turnstile at your local supermarket.   So now that they're official anyone in the forum plan to snap some of these up for present giving this year?
