Nexus 7 Help / Low brightness on book pages

Whilst getting to know my Nexus 7, I must have used an unusual touch combination, because my book displays now have very low brightness. The brightness control is set to maximum and I have tried auto-brightness, but neither affects the low brightness of the books display.
Any help would be appreciated.

We are discussing the built-in reader, so it's probably part of Jelly Bean.
