Just curious, any amateur radio operators in here?
« on: July 13, 2012, 02:11:19 PM »
I know radiocycle is one, but anyone else?  One big plus for me to get the Nexus 7 is having a microphone for Echolink. For now I use my DroidX for echolink when traveling, which is nice since I can use it without wifi, but still having it on the N7 will be a huge bonus.

Also any other ham radio related apps that are a must to install?

Hey Sam, I am not a radio operator,  but I am curious to know about this app:

http://www.kxan.com/dpp/news/local/austin/austin-company-works-magic-on-phones

It is in the play store and I wondered if it could be used as a phone, per se, since we don't have 3/4g, or would TiKL be better?

Thanks!

I hadnt heard of zello but sounds like its more of a PA or CB type app for phones.  They compared themselves to Nextel which advertises their service as similar to a walkies talkie.

This isn't related to Amateur radio per say nor will it allow you to place POTS phone calls from what I saw, but I hope Skype or Google Voice will allow calls to work through the N7.

radio

To make calls... often times when I'm home and we call my folks I just put my phone on speaker so the entire family can chat.  It'd be nice to do this from the N7 as well.  Also my DroidX phone has a phone number through Google Voice that can accept calls just the same, so if I have Google Voice on my N7 it'd be nice to accept calls there as well.  oh, and checking voicemail would be nice too :)

I have Google Voice side loaded on my Kindle Fire now and can listen to voicemails with it, but that's it since there's no microphone.
