Nexus 7 Game Spotlight: 'COGS'
« on: August 29, 2012, 03:04:27 PM »

Seeing as it's the middle of the week I thought a lot of forum members could use a fun distraction and 'COGS' on your Nexus 7 is just the ticket.   'COGS' is a really innovative 'Rube Goldberg'-esque puzzle game where you have to build increasingly complex machines using sliding tiles in both 2D and 3D environments.  For those that might be familiar with the classic adventure fantasy game 'Myst', or the movie 'Hugo',  'COGS' has that same kind of 'mad inventor's workshop' feel to it.   Here's a gameplay video that gives you an overview of 'COGS'.

Features:

INVENTOR MODE
Starting with simple puzzles, players are introduced to the widgets that are used to build machines — gears, pipes, balloons, chimes, hammers, wheels, props, and more.

TIME CHALLENGE MODE
If you finish a puzzle in Inventor Mode, it will be unlocked here. This time, it will take fewer moves to reach a solution, but you only have 30 seconds to find it.

MOVE CHALLENGE MODE
Take your time and plan ahead. Every click counts when you only get ten moves to find a solution.

'COGS' is a gem of a game.  Each puzzle challenges you in two ways.  First of all you need to figure out what the 'machine' your building is intended to do.   Does it blow up balloons from steam running through sliding pipes?  Does it turn a blade to let it fly away?   How about power a rocket engine or pop a 'Jack-in-the-Box'?   Now after you figure out the goal of the machine you have to slide tiles that contain some kind of tool or part such as a pipe, gear, bell or others to power the machine.   Most of the puzzles take place on multiple sides of the device so you have to rotate the machine to see if what you're sliding on one side has the intended effect on another.   In this respect there's definitely a bit of 'Rubik's Cube' strategy involved.

The graphics look great on your Nexus 7's screen and half the fun in figuring each puzzle is to active the ending animation where your 'machine' does its task.  There's 50 different puzzles and three different game play modes for a total of what is estimated at over 10 hours of gameplay.  'COGS' is $2.99 and in my opinion well worth the few bucks.  You can grab it at the Google Play store at the link below or learn even more about it at the developer's website also linked below.
