Here's a link on how to boot in safe mode.

Edit: I just tried this.  It disables widgets, removes third party apps/widgets icons from the apps/widget screens, and leaves your home screen shortcuts available for running/testing.

Bit of a noob so this may be a stupid question but how will safe mode let me identify rouge apps?

Boot into safe mode  Check battery usage. It should show screen using >90% of the battery. Refresh the display, run your favorite app for 5 minutes, and check your battery usage again.  Repeat with your next app. Your rogue app will be the one(s) that drop(s) screen usage the most, down to 70-80%
