unable to update to 4.2.1
« on: January 14, 2013, 09:35:19 PM »
I have received the 4.2.1 update several times on my nexus 7. My nexus is using the stock ROM and had never been rooted. Every time I try running the update it would crash in the middle of the installation and give the the exclamation  point android icon then reboot. I'm currently running 4.1.2. It never loaded the 4.2 before the 4.2.1. Is there anything I can do without rooting my nexus to update to the latest firmware?

You could unlock the your Nexus 7 and the flash the 4.2.1 factory image, then relock using one of the toolkits. This will completely wipe your device though...

that,  or he could keep it unlock. or he can call the support and see if he's eligible for a substitution

Trust me...that's more hassle than it's worth if you can fix it yourself...

Contract Google, wait for decision and wait for RMA email. Then click link in RMA email to order replacement device which Google then place an authorisation on your credit/debit card for the full price of your device until they receive the faulty device back and have confirmed its nothing you've done to the device. Then you have to return the defective device with the RMA (Returns Merchant Authorisation) document from the email and the returns label that comes with your replacement device....

What a con, I'm returning my Nexus 4 now and have had to borrow £280 GBP to cover me. Grrr >:(>:(>:(

I would have thought you'd contact Asus?

Depends where it was purchased and what country come to think of it, here in the UK it's the point of sales responsibility for defective items but otherwise if the device wasn't purchased from Google Play then yes, you would probably need to contact ASUS.

Ordered from Google Play though and they don't have stores, and the Nexus 4 would be double the price if they did...

What is the cause of a totally stock unit not updating?if you refuse to unlock and then relock which is quite painless BTW. You could be updated and locked again in less than an hour. Before sending back have you considered a factory reset? Not sure what good it would do but worth a shot. Maybe you downloaded something that is interfering.

With no root access IDK what would cause this other than an application but what could do this....

I would do as bjs suggested, backup your device a factory data reset. If that doesn't work the unlock and flash the 4.2.1 factory.

Unless you can return it under warranty...

I tried to update after doing the factory reset but would still crash then reboot. I purchased the tablet from a store with a 2 year warranty coverage. So I'll go back to the store and see if I can exchange it for another nexus 7. Thanks everyone for your advice.
