USB Storage

These new articles are not encouraging...let's hope there will be a mod without too much bulk (USB power source, etc.) or having to root.

It is puzzling how Asus was going to offer the MeMo 370t (before Google got a hold of them) with all of the Nexus 7 specs plus SDCard reader and HDMI for $249. They would not have offered that setup if it cost them $248 since they do not have a Google store to profit from post purchase.

It looks like that 'cloud' is turning gray.

It is still a great tab for the price, I'm just glad I ordered the 16g.  :-\

The problem isn't one of no power available at the USB port.  They plan on charging the battery from that port.  From what i have been reading, a keyboard and mouse can also be used there.  Neither of those are passive devices as they both require power to operate.  So power is available there.  The problem is going to be that Google intentionally crippled the Nexus by not including drivers for the memory cards, hard drives, etc.  Interesting that they advertise the thing as being all wonderful, and then it's crippled.  :(

I'm not impressed with their decision regarding the drivers.  The Chinese rip-off tablets that sell for $60 or so all have the required drivers along with the SD card slot, so it isn't a "cost cutting" decision at all, as the actual costs are minimal.  It's them trying to force us to use their other services.

The final solution will be to root the device so we can install our own drivers...

True, I guess that is their plan as they did design this tablet to work with the Google Play Store.  But it is so much more than that and, for this price, people are going to mod, hack, and hot rod this tab to death. Obviously, I'm not one of them but I love to discover and ride the Android train.  I just hope they have kept this device open enough to do that.

I think it will be a fun ride and hope a lot of the above happens on this forum.

Here's another link suggesting we won't be able to use any kind of external storage such as USB drive or micro SC if I'm understanding it [unless the Nexus is hacked?]:

Something similar is true for USB memory. The Nexus 7 does support USB-OTG (On The Go), but it doesn't all of OTG. The Nexus 7 cannot use USB storage, nothing. Not even a USB thumb drive will work according to all the reports.

And to drive a nail in the coffin, Jelly bean does not support Adobe Flash and seemingly never will.

Just do a search for the keywords of MHL "Nexus 7", OTG "Nexus 7", "jelly bean" flash to verify what I am saying.

Yes, but I wouldn't really worry about any of that because you'll simply root it (it's actually already been rooted over at XDA) and someone will very quickly come up with a pack of drivers as a hack that will enable a lot of that for those that want it.  One of the great things about Android is that there are so many talented developers and hackers that create mods and hacks for our devices that anything the manufacturer leaves out is quickly rectified :)

That's what I'm living for now.
The Nexus7 will become my dream machine, in spite of Google's best efforts to cripple it.

Would have been nice if we did not have to root to get extra storage.
