I never knew their was a paid version of Foxfi. Maybe that is why  I kept getting disconnected.
Yeah I think  it just came out today.  Not sure what the difference is other than it won't break your tether after about 10-15 minutes and tell you you need to pay $6.95 for the upgraded version.  $6.95 seems a little high for that kind of app...just my opinion.

Well, high price yes, but if that's the one thing you need to get hooked up, in the long run it's no too big a deal...
Agree... When you need it, you need it. Better than paying Big Red $30.00 to use the native "hotspot" app for sure!

JP,
Have you tried the SqLite edit? I too have RAZR Maxx, and it works flawlessly. This way you can use the built in hotspot and widgets. A single widget to toggle the hotspot on is much easier than starting up FoxFi and PdaNet then connecting.

No I haven't tried that one...not sure I how I messed it, lol.  Thanks for info I'll give it a try.  The only time I use PdaNet is if I need to use the Bluetooth tether.  You know, I'm not sure why FoxFi works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't.  I wonder if it is dependent on whether you have 3g or 4g.  It seems to always work when there is a good 4g signal and never with a moderate 3g signal...maybe just coincidence.  Again thanks for the lead on SqLIte...not sure how I missed that one.

I use PDNet on my N7 and Foxfi on my Razr. They work together seamlessly for a bluetooth tether using the Razr's 3g or 4g.

Another Bluetooth tether... Am I wrong here, but isn't Bluetooth a lot slower than Wi-Fi? Shouldn't Bluetooth be the last option?

Can someone that uses Bluetooth tether run a test for me? Download Speedtest from Google Play on the N7 and the tethered device. Run the test on both devices and post the results.

If I'm correct, there are much better options for tethering a RAZR.

Maybe I should have been a little more detailed in my earlier response.  First, I have a Razr Maxx and N7 both rooted.  PDNet on the N7 and Foxfi on the Maxx.  Yes, a WiFi tether is faster than a Bluetooth tether.  From my experience, for what ever reason, I cannot always establish a WiFi tether between my Maxx and my N7.   Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  The Bluetooth tether always works.  And, if you don't have the paid version of FoxFi ($6.95) there is a time limit on how long your WiFi tether will last.  The only time I tether is when I need to use my N7 and there is no WiFi available.  I only tether if I need a file off of Google Drive or Box.  I've never used a tether to steam music or video's or browse the Web for fun.  In cases where I need something that is not stored on my N7 the Bluetooth tether has always been "fast enough" for my needs.

I have a rooted Motorola Triumph phone and I'd like to use it as a hotspot for my N7.  I wonder if anyone is using an Android phone for the wifi on their N7.

I just installed OpenGarden on my Razr Maxx and Nexus 7 and they connected first try with no problem.  Speed is not to bad, about like 3g as someone else has already reported.

Nexus 7 Storage and Backup / Re: Android vs Nandroid Back Up
« on: October 18, 2012, 07:14:11 AM »
In the Nexus Tool Kit, there are nandroid back up & android back up.
What is the difference ? Should I back up both options just in case ?
When restoring, which one should I use ?
Thanks
The difference is this: When you preform a Android backup you are backing up contacts and other USER data, but you are not backing up (creating an IMAGE) of the state of your phone at the time of backup.  In other words, if your Nexus (or phone) gets into a bootloop or freezes an Android backup won't help you muich.  On the other hand if you get into a bootloop or phone freezes, as long as you can boot into a stock recovery or a custom recovery then you can flash your nandroid backup and restore your Nexus back the "state" it was in before the freeze/bootloop etc.  You have to be rooted and use something like CWM or TWRP to enable a custom recovery and create a nandorid backkup.  This is a pretty simplistic explanation, but I hope it gives you a better idea of the difference between the two.  You can run both backups, but if you have a custom recovery and using CWM or TWRP a nandroid will backup the same user data that an Android backup performs plus the "state or image" of your phone at the time.

There are a number of good apps in the Play Store to use to backup your pics, videos, music etc.  I also recommend you use a free "cloud" service like Google Drive (app available in Play Store) to backup the personal data you want to protect so that if something bad happens to your device there is a backup "off" the device.  Google Drive cloud service is free.  Keep in mind, the only way to do a complete backup (personal data and restore your phone to an operational state) is to do a nandroid which requires root and a custom recovery.

I 'm stuck. Standard bootloader recovery fails because of the bug.  quick boot fails despite my reloading it twice. I even downloaded TWRP, and it doesn't go into recovery mode, either.

Caveat emptor. You may not be able to recover backups until a fix for this bug comes out.
birdastrompgman I am in the say boat as you, can't get to stock recovery or custom recovery.  I have tried Goo Manager, TWRP, ROM Manager, you name it.  I guess we'll have to wait for a guru to figure this out.  I have 4.1.2 installed and rooted, everything works fine, just no way to get to recovery for me.

Nexus 7 Root, Hacks, Mods And Development / Nexus Toolkit

With the release of the Nexus update 4.1.2, will there be a new version of the Tookit, or will the current version work with the latest OS update (4.1.2)?

Nexus 7 Polls / Re: Do You Plan On Rooting Your Nexus 7?

Let me add one more app that is almost a must for any user who wants to root their Nexus 7.  ROM Toolbox is amazing.  This one app gives the rooted user the ability to flash, backup, change fonts, load ROMs, etc all in one app.  Highly recommend any rooted user to download this free app and check it out.  It is truely a "Tool Box" for your Nexus 7.

I rooted mine on Tuesday. It was pretty easy.

Tell me this bman; what have you done with your tab now that you couldn't have done before you rooted it?? No pressure, just curious...  I'm considering it myself.

I rooted mine several weeks ago primarily to take advantage of several apps that require root:
--Titanium Backup Pro to have the ability to freeze apps that I don't want to start on boot
--SD Maid - the best app to monitor and control the entire file system on the Nexus, not just the files available for view without root.  This is important to me since have limited storage space without adding additional hardware).  You'd be amazed of how much "crap" is kept in files you cannot see unless you're rooted.
--Root enables you to take advantage of all the capabilities/functions of Apex...not important unless you're using the Apex launcher...which is an outstanding launcher...better than stock in my opinion.
--Root allows you to install ROM Manager which in turn allows you to get into Recovery.  So, if you want to flash ROMs, themes, fonts etc you can do it.  It also enables you to create a backup of your ROM be it stock or custom.  As far as I can tell, the only way to get to Recovery is through ROM Manager...you can't do it any other way...it is a glitch on the Nexus 7.
--There are a few other apps that require root that many use to  control CPU speeds, extend battery life, change icons, theme, tether, hotspot etc.
The Google Nexus Toolkit available on this forum is an excellent tool to load the necessary drivers on your computer, unlock the bootloader, root your Nexus, create a restore to stock backup etc.  If you decide to root I'd recommend using this toolkit...it is excellent and takes the guess work out of the process.  I'm not a Android guru so I needed something that was idiot proof, lol.

How is a Bluetooth headset a drawback?
In my opinion it is a drawback for a couple of reasons: 1) it is another device that you have to sync 2) I don't like setting around with something stuck in my ear (particularly at home).  I'd rather be headphone or ear piece free and 3) the separation you can achieve between the Nexus 7 and the phone is much less than the separation you can achieve  between the Nexus and your wifi (in my case anyway).

I have some screen shots but they're huge and I don't have time to resize them right now.

Yeah I guess I may have to break down and get a blue tooth headphone set with mic.

Jpcalhoun which do you like better now that you've tried them both?
Well it's hard to say.  The inability to answer calls on the Nexus with Talkatone and the lag in the conversation is a drawback.  The need to sync a Bluetooth headset when using Tablet Talk is a drawback, but you can place and answer calls...that's a big plus.  I guess I prefer Talkatone because there is one less device (headset) to sync.  Another thought...you don't need a Google number with Tablet Talk...that makes texting and calling less confusing for others.

14
Yeah you can make and receive calls with tablet talk. Bluetooth headset is a must in my opinion
Yeah, I've been playing with Tablet Talk...the phone functions work great but you do need a Bluetooth headset to hear and speak using your tablet.

Jpcalhoun, thanks for the post!   I've been searching and wondering if there was a way to sms on this thing and your method works.

The only thing I don't like about it is it uses my Google voice number rather than my normal cell number so people I text have no clue its me until I explain it, which is fine really, I'm just searching for perfection is all lol.

Great way to SMS on the nexus though.  Thanks very much!
Yeah I hear what you're saying about having to use the google number for text.  The main reason I use the app is the ability to make phone calls using the Nexus 7.  However, I haven't figured out how to get the thing to receive phone calls.  All calls place against the google number ring on my Razr Maxx.

Tablet talk does the exact same thing.  I Bluetooth my RAZR Maxx to my Nexus 7 and start up tablet talk to connect them.  When my phone rings, caller id window pops up on my Nexus and gives me the answer option.   I have yet to answer with it but...    I think I would have to have Bluetooth headphones but not sure.  I'm in it for the texting however I can even  dial out using the Nexus.  If I can figure out how to post screen shots on here I'll do that in an hour or so after I get my son home.   Its pretty cool and well worth the price....and no middle man extra phone number!
Hey thanks.  I also have Tablet Talk on my Nexus 7 and Razr Maxx.  When connected Bluetooth I haven't noticed TabletTalk giveing me any kind of notice if someone calls the Razr.  The texting functions works great no doubt about that.  I'm going to have to do some exploring...thanks for the info.
