Do You Plan On Rooting Your Nexus 7?

I haven't done a single thing with my rooted nexus 7 , other then look at directories above the sdcard level,  and did a complete system and data backup.  When my USB-otg. Cable arrives, I'll move my apps data to a real SD card.

These devices are meant to be rooted, dont get me wrong but stock is OK, but to use the limited space fully the best way is to root.

I have changed many of the default apps for the ones I want in system. Also being able to make nand backups is a plus and also a better Kernel to overclock and attach more devices with an OTG cable.

I rooted mine last weekend and it's great. I am so glad I did, although I admit to some trepidation going into it. Since I hadn't installed much of anything, I did not have much to rebuild - mostly just my email settings.

Thanks for sharing your rooting experience. Yes, it is a bit scary rooting your first device, but once you experience a rooted Android device, you never want to go back.

To late to think, I barely took it off the charger before I rooted.  Heck, it still had the screen protector on it, and I didn't even log in to it before it was done.

I rooted mine several weeks ago primarily to take advantage of several apps that require root:
--Titanium Backup Pro to have the ability to freeze apps that I don't want to start on boot
--SD Maid - the best app to monitor and control the entire file system on the Nexus, not just the files available for view without root.  This is important to me since have limited storage space without adding additional hardware).  You'd be amazed of how much "crap" is kept in files you cannot see unless you're rooted.
--Root enables you to take advantage of all the capabilities/functions of Apex...not important unless you're using the Apex launcher...which is an outstanding launcher...better than stock in my opinion.
--Root allows you to install ROM Manager which in turn allows you to get into Recovery.  So, if you want to flash ROMs, themes, fonts etc you can do it.  It also enables you to create a backup of your ROM be it stock or custom.  As far as I can tell, the only way to get to Recovery is through ROM Manager...you can't do it any other way...it is a glitch on the Nexus 7.
--There are a few other apps that require root that many use to  control CPU speeds, extend battery life, change icons, theme, tether, hotspot etc.
The Google Nexus Toolkit available on this forum is an excellent tool to load the necessary drivers on your computer, unlock the bootloader, root your Nexus, create a restore to stock backup etc.  If you decide to root I'd recommend using this toolkit...it is excellent and takes the guess work out of the process.  I'm not a Android guru so I needed something that was idiot proof, lol.

I've found a lot of uses for my rooted device. I'm storing 12gb of data on an external usb flash drive. 5gb is nandroid backups. 2.5gb are data storage for my astronomy & birding programs, accessed directly from the flash drive.. There is a. 2.5gb movie file.

So,  I'm using 12gb & still have 14gb free on the flash drive. I have about 90 applications loaded, & 4.5gb of my original 8gb storage space still available - not bad for buying the cheap 8gb Nexus 7. Rooting was free, the otg cable was $5, & $20 for the 32gb flash drive - $225 for a 40gb Nexus 7.

Nice reply there mate, you've cover some important aspects to rooting. I use most of those apps functions you've listed but I don't use ROM Manager, I have TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) Recovery on my Nexus 7 and use Goo Manager to boot to recovery or I stuff when running stock.
I'm running CyanogenMod 10 atm and the power menu that appears when you long press the power button includes a reboot option, this option is contained in most custom ROM's.
You can also use apps like Extended Controls which has a reboot widget and there are others available on Google Play.
Just to add to your paragraph about apps that allow overclocking, undervolting etc, this can only be done with a relevant kernel.
