The statement that the Nexus 7 will not work with external drives is false.  The Kingston WI drive works fine w/o rooting.

I have attached my Kingston wi-drive with wifi and my bluetooth keyboard to the Nexus 7 and both worked perfectly.  I have videos on the drive and typed this with the keyboard.  It is a New Trent keyboard purchased on Amazon.

Google Now must be primarily for the phone.  I don't see it working on the Nexus 7 since it is wifi only, or am I missing something?
