Can anyone explain how to get the Clock alarm to make a sound when the Nexus7 is showing a lock screen under Android 5 Lollipop?  I see there are different volumes for Alarm and Notifications, but I don't get any sound from the alarm no matter what I do with the volumes.  My Nexus7 has multiple users -- does it matter who sets the alarm?  Does it matter whether notifications are on or off for the Clock app? I have "notifications when screen is locked" set to "Don't show any notifications" -- assuming that "show" doesn't mean "sound".  But obviously I'm doing something wrong.

When I set the alarm and leave the Nexus7 alone for several hours, it will be showing the lock screen.  Do I have to change something about that to get the Clock alarm to work?

The KitKat Clock alarm worked perfectly without any exasperation....  I just set it and it rang when the alarm time arrived.

I have a rooted Nexus7 (2012).  An update of the OS, going from KitKat to Lollipop, downloaded without my doing anything, but I didn't accept the update.  Do I have to root all over to update to Lollipop?  If not, what do I need to do to wind up with a rooted tablet running Lollipop?  How do I specify the correct 5.0.2 build for my Nexus7?

If I use Quick boot Recovery mode and choose "Wipe data/factory reset", will the Nexus 7 still be rooted after that?

I rooted my Nexus7, but when I set it up with my username, etc., I somehow did not choose the option to restore my data from Google backup.  Is there a way I can get the Nexus7 to reset to the initial screen (like a factory reset, but not actually factory)?  If I do that, will the pre-rooting Google backup be lost anyway (so that I can never get it back)?

I just rooted my Nexus7 (2012), which was (and is) running KitKat 4.4.4.   Now, if the time comes when I am offered a later Android OS, what do I do?

New Nexus 7 Android OS (2nd Gen) / Finally, KitKat 4.4.4
« on: October 18, 2014, 12:54:48 PM »
My Nexus7 LTE just now was pushed the OS 4.4.4....   my old Nexus7 (2012) has had Android 4.4.4 since May.

I want to copy a file from my Nexus7 (2012) before I root the Nexus7.  The file is said to be in /data/misc/wifi, but adb shell won't give me permission for the root data directory and the su command is "not found".  I just want to gain permission to pull a file in the /data directory, or to be a rooted user or a super-user temporarily. Is this impossible to do without rooting the Nexus7?
The situation seems like catch-22, since if I root my Nexus 7, the file I want will have disappeared.
Any advice?

New Nexus 7 Help (2nd Gen) / Converting from 1st gen to 2nd gen
« on: March 30, 2014, 10:46:27 AM »
I am about to buy a 2013 Nexus 7.  My 2012 8Gb Nexus 7 is still working.  Can I get all my apps onto the 2nd gen N7 just by using some built-in Restore function?  Or, do I need to buy and download each app again on the 2nd gen N7?
What if I backup my apps using another backup and restore app beforehand?  Is there an app that will then let me put the apps on my 2nd gen N7?   If I do restore the apps to my 2nd gen N7, are the same apps still live on my 1st gen N7?

Nexus 7 Audio/Video / Full screen Skype video call possible?
« on: December 31, 2012, 05:05:52 PM »
Is it possible to get rid of the column listing of contacts to the left of the incoming video on a Skype call?  If so, how is it done?

Nexus 7 General Discussion / Charging cable died
« on: November 14, 2012, 04:30:59 PM »
My USB cable that plugs into the black adapter stopped working.  It can't be used by any device for charging or data transfer.  What a surprise... physically it looks fine and did not suffer any maltreatment.

Fortunately I found that a Kindle cable works for charging the N7 with the N7's own adapter.  But I have to borrow that cable from a Kindle user.

Other USB cables with micro-USB plugs (such as for cell phones) do not work for charging my N7, so I ordered some new N7 cables.

Nexus 7 Help / Credit balance on Google Play possible?
« on: November 04, 2012, 09:47:33 AM »
Here I am in Mexico with my N7 that I purchased in the US.  The prices for items on Google Play show up as Mexican pesos. But my credit card is a US dollars card, so I will wind up with an extra $5 or so foreign transaction fee if I make a purchase here in Mexico.  Is there some way I can add cash in dollars to Google Play and then not need to charge my credit card when I make a purchase?

Well, now that I got the upgrade to Android 4.1.2, I find that if I turn on my N7 in landscape position, part of the clock time is cut off.  Is there a way to change the format of the time?

Also, since it originally took me three weeks to find Google search on my N7, I was dismayed to find it does not work the same on the landscape home page.  Fortunately it is easy to find, though ... just hit the letter "g".

Nexus 7 Help / How do I associate ePub books with Nook
« on: September 11, 2012, 09:49:03 AM »
When I download an eBook with format .epub, my N7 offers choices of apps to use for opening it, but none of the choices are any good.  How can I make it open in Barnes and Noble Nook?  (or will Google Play Books work? -- how could I make this app open the epub file?)  So far, I have been moving the downloaded file to the Nook folder, after which I can easily read it in Nook, but that is not a very convenient way to do it.

Nexus 7 General Discussion / Google books at two prices
« on: September 07, 2012, 09:45:17 AM »
I have found some books on Google Play that have a discounted price on the web but, at the same time, have a higher price if you purchase through your N7 Google Play app.  If you purchase on the web, of course you also have the book available to your N7 "Play Books" app on the same Google account, so it is worthwhile checking for the lowest price.

Site News / Guidance for first-time Android users

This Forum should post an easy-to-find instruction sheet of key things to know if you buy a Nexus 7 and have never used Android before.  For me, I would have saved many hours of frustration if I knew these three things

1.  How to get rid of the white dot that stops you from doing anything when you turn on the Nexus 7.  Answer: slide it outside the circle

2.  How to turn off the sound.  Answer: Push and hold the power button (and then touch "Silent Mode"), or push the bottom button on the right side until the volume gets to minimum and then push once more,  or insert earphones into the jack.

3.  That I should purchase and read the Nexus 7 Survival Guide -- with instructions on how to get it on the web or on the Nexus 7 via Google Play Books or Amazon.
While I have owned my Nexus 7 for six weeks, I just found out about the Survival Guide and had no idea how to do most of the things explained in there.
